yep,

though i would have preferred to use the new style coolant system for the power loss of the fan. i am slightly adapting the current system hose wise though.
i've sourced a brandnew 343 1.4 radiator too and thought id would have been a waste to cut the frontplate up for the airflow of a late model 340/360 mk3 radiator.

i might have to remake the brackets for the PAS pump, i don't know if the old style waterpump conflicts with it, i guess i'll find that out with the B14.4E on the engine support.

also, i've made a deal for front and rear koni's, have new discs/blocks ready and all other parts of the steering/undercarriage will be refurbished/replaced and painted or powdercoated.

outright, i paid 300 euro's and get 50 back if i deliver the pressureplate and clutchplate back.

towed it to my work today; including a 3inch snow package




went to work straight away but was reminded of the fact that paul had refilled the coolant with water to get the car at my door







pretty much frozen solid, lucky the coolant level wasn't at max so nothing blew/crack because of the ice.

i took of the head;


and reassembled everything to the .4E head;






back onto the engine;


and added a few more bits, coolant fan, radiator, alternator, airfilter, etc.




that's how it sits right now. i started off an hour too late this afternoon, would have had the car running by now tomorrow i'll finish it and start it up again.

I see from those pics that the temp sender on those is at the back of the head like DAFs.

yep, all 300 with B14 and the old style coolant system had it at the rear of the cylinder head, with the new waterpump/radiator etc the sender was build into the waterpump; changeover was in 1984

build the last bits back together and filled everything up;


and then it started on the first attempt


really pleased with the result right now runs great again

1984? My 1982 1.4 Vario car with Smiths sender up front on the waterpump housing...

that was a typo, i meant 1982!

in fact, the B14.2E engine could be equipped with new or old style coolant system! that as M Y'81 343 with a b14.2E
(you can see this is a b14.2E by the exhaust manifold and the water nipple in the cylinderhead just above exhaust runner nr4)

but that valve cover on your pic is something i don't recognize straight away on a my 82-83-84 car, i believe those still had the two spring setup for zero throttle position (the last b14.3e i worked on had that) but can't recall that atm. do you have a overview pic of your engine bay?

and 90 euro's for a valvespring compressor was a bit too much for a tool that is rarely used, so i spend some time in our machine shop and created the following:

made a slight mistake creating a hole instead of a gap so need to do it again

this afternoon i filled the fuel tank up with RON98 unleaded, exactly 40liters went in; just in time at the fuelpump!

after that, went to my work for a complete check of the car from underneath.

checked oil levels in cvt gearbox, secundairy had old engineoil in it so that was replaced with proper 80W90

Primary gearbox had old oil in it, replaced that too.

apart from the tiny hole on the mudguard the chassis is solid as a rock, very very pleased with that!!!

adjusted the clutch:


airgap was waay to big. now with 2mm of adjustments plates the airgap is perfect and driving is way better. also noticed that the gearleverplay is in the primary gearbox, too bad. that means i'll have to keep selecting P first before going to R..

when i went off the car barely moved, so checked the brakes/suspension


and on the brigde next to it, is a Terberg FM2850 that i put together earlier this week


there was some rust on the discs, so had a run around the block with the brake slightly applied and now the discs are clean and shiny.

when i drove it onto the bridge and turned it off i noticed a shhhhhhhh noise coming from under the hood.
when i placed the .4e head onto the .1e block the hose from carb to head was plugged since the .4e head doesn;t have that hose connection. the hose was now blowing up and coolant dripping onto the exhaust manifold
fixed it with a few new hoses, pics below. also i had a floaterchambergasket lying spare, so took the carb apart and gave it a good clean.

the engine ran slightly rough so after all other work i adjusted it and now it runs perfectly smooth;






that's it for today! the 343 drives great again, ready for my dad's daily use . that also means that the red 340 will soon be taken apart, drove 200km with that last weekend and that also drives excellent, but all for the greater good

for a 1980 it's especcialy rare! but the 340T from 86 is even harder underneath
