Well indeed! Top speed (quoted as down a hill with the wind behind it...) is a matter of diminishing returns...

340 1.4 4spd...~70bhp...105 mph?
340 1.4 5spd...~70bhp...108 mph? (Nessy)
360 2.0 5spd...~115bhp...120 mph?
740 2.3 Turbo...~182bhp...140 mph?

See what I mean - the most impressive car there is the 340 1.4 4spd!

cheers

Clive Burke wrote:If you want close ratios - go for the automatic, the 340 1.4 is one of the first cars ever to have the world beating 'stepless' CVT transmission, instead of those dreadful power sucking, fuel sucking 'normal automatic gearboxes' you must try one if your'e buying a 340, they're quite a bit quicker then the manual, mine once did just under 40mpg on a long run. The Volvo 360 I'm selling no here was my mum's, she bought it after she saw how well my CVT 340 was lasting. Clv :340:
I really have to disagree with you on that one Clive...
The CVT was originally invented by the Dutch engineer Hub van Doorne, founder of the DAF motor company. He introduced the CVT (then called Variomatic) in the 1950's. DAF continued to use the Variomatic untill 1976 when Volvo bought DAF. Volvo actually used the Design of the DAF 77 and/or 88 and called it "Volvo 343" and renamed the Variomatic to CVT so people thought Volvo invented it... The volvo CVT is identical to the DAF Variomatic, they only reversed the gear lever to make it look like a real automatic transmission...

The white one is my 1974 DAF 66 Marathon 1300 Coupé and the orange one is my 1976 Volvo 66 GLS...
Those cars are almost as comfortable as my 360 minus a couple of years of  engineering...

Sorry for going off-topic...

Come on Foggy, you've been in a 5 speed 1.4 doing more than that, on a more Southern test track....... (albiet only by 5mph or so....). Tom, get a rev counter, it can sound like the engines spinning fast at 4.5k, it should make it.

Alright, don't rub it in!! LOL

Most I've 'thrashed' my car is coming out of roads and wheelspinning, and I throw it into corners at high speed sometimes. Hardcore shiz, eh?

Oh well, I suppose I just aren't as cool as y'all...:(

Yeah...you don't have a rev counter :) Is this joke getting a bit old yet...?!

Joking aside, would you like a rev counter? I can sure as hell track you one down if you do...

Yep, there's nothing quite like getting a 340 1.4 sideways at 85mph.............
