Personally I got 28mpg around town and 36-38ish mpg on long runs in my old fully-serviced 1.4 4 speed 343. Admittedly the long run economy would be better with another gear, but can't imagine the in town economy to change dramatically because of this.
Exactly, you had unserviced points for most of that time rather than a serviced renix setup, and no 5th gear (though granted that wouldn't help town much. On and off choke?! What random school of Brummie driving employs this? I've always seen very good MPG reviews from the 340, especially on the original road tests where the cars were in "as new" condition rather than "as drifted/bangernomic'd" etc.

Just don't go near the second venturi, anticipate what the traffic around you is going to do. From what Anjo was saying the other day my 1.4 was special... she wouldn't rev compared to the ones he's experienced, but the 1.7 would happily.

You are going to cry when I've finished this tank in Fake... I think I may have got near to cracking F7R economy.

I used to do say 5 miles from cold every day and got sub 30's MPG - all I'm saying that in my book this is not good economy for what is on offer! My S70 gets similar economy! I guess it very much depends on what you call 'town driving'. ;) I'd like to see these road tests, I always saw the opposite ;)

Oh and I mean full choke from cold start... then off... if you misinterpreted

I totally agree they can get great economy on a long run -especially the 5 speeders, but imo they will always struggle on shorter trips.

EDIT: I present to you an 85 Road test of the 340 1.4 which will be Renix, the MPG on test ranges from 25.2-31.7mpg

EDIT: We shall as ever have to thank Mr Trigger. You've also fallen into the trap of using test MPG, and when has a car test ever involved driving it sedately around town and along a motorway

You were the one who quoted road tests showing 340's that had good economy! To be fair I'd believe them figures to be fairly realistic as well. The 33mpg achieved from the 1.7 was stated to be achieved on a 70mph motorway run.

Yeah, I know can't find them so decided I needed to change tack... No one noticed though, so it's fine.

Seriously, my 1.4 never did as well on runs as my 1.7 but the gearing is against it as well as thrashing a poor ikkle 1.4. I Do find that 33mpg on a 70 run fairly plausable as they do "actual 70" rather than clock so that'd show up as nigh on 80.

VND, don't get too excited, I was seeing nearly constant 25MPG tanks for the last while both town and runs, I'm going to have improved on that but it's not going to have turned into a diesal  Rally I managed 14MPG the other day, where as last night it was significantly better :D

Dont shoot yourself down dude. All improvements count bigtime.
