I thought that we had one already? Maybe it got off during board update?
Anyway I think it was rather simple to install too, it has some time since I did admin phpBB but I think that it was only few clicks and done or was it with that simple machines board like that...

Some bots use text-recognition to get around the captcha thing, which means you need to make the captcha pic so difficult to read that it can deter "real" users as well ...
Better are such mods like "if this form is filled out in less than 5 seconds, it must be a spammer, so ignore" or IP recognition of known spammer servers ..

Yeah, also you can put in custom questions or instructions such as "type 'I'm not a spammer' in this box"

Ubuntu board has such mod in search feature, it asks things like what color is orange or how many is 1 + 5 etc. Just needs updates to questions every now and then and works well.
We could put of course better questions in, like gear ratios of M47RII box or what years mk2 was made, simple things like that, however it might cause some reduction in number of members if we put something really difficult like Which renix number was used in 340 1.7

This would either raise the standard of the average member, or reduce the overall number of them

Almost worth a shot

It's rediculous that mods can't ban users

I'm with you there ... Where's Aymat?
Maybe it's an idea not to reply to the spammers' posts? Makes it harder for the mods to spot and delete ...
