I dunno, if "enjoying driving" means racing Scoobs then of course, the diesel is not the car to choose. I had a 280 W114 for ten years, and that had that superb dual-cam M110 engine, with a great noise and 180kph top speed but it did consume 15 l/100kms whatever that is in mpgs. A mate has a 200D W115 - even less horses than a 240D but that is a fun car too, just in a totally different way.

Cheers

I'm not expecting an old diesel to be fast. I'm getting it for the more-than-35-mpg thing. If it's going to be petrol may as well be a 300, at least I know how to fix it. That or a redblock 240 just for it's unbreakableness.

I can't imagine that Merc to get significantly more than 35mpg... maybe I'm wrong but early diesels in big heavy cars weren't that great. If this is the case a GLS doing 35mpg for £200 offsets and fuel diference costs ;)

After driving my GLS again on Monday, do it :D

Might do, shame I can't even see this one though. Hell, why the hell don't I just take the valver. I'm starting to think that's a really REALLY good idea now.

240 is still on the cards of course.

It's a 1983 model year car...first year for 360s. There never was a car badged as a 363*, 364 or 365. In 1982 (last year of the "final digit") the 2.0 cars were still badged as 343/345 DLS/GLS, with the 'S' denoting the 2.0 engine. In 1983 when the 360 was launched, the door-designation was dropped.

*Ok, so there was the 363CS, but let's not split hairs...

The wierd thing about 300s and those codes is that they were all 340s according to the VIN. All Volvo cars before the "S/V" badging era had the model number (including door count) in the VIN...so even a 1998 940 saloon will have 944 in the VIN. However, 360s were reported as being 340s...so my 1988 360 5-door hatch, for example, has 345 in the VIN. Strange...

The previous owner painted the door bottoms because the paint faded. Yes. Because the paint faded. Nothing to do with them being rotten. I have a 1983 360 in my unit at the moment, and it has nothing joining the door skin to the frame along the bottom edge...

Still an awesome car. But you'd but the Y-plate GLT in Rugby...well...if John wasn't already on it.

cheers

(the auction ends then)

Phail, however I found this upon my travels through the world of wide web:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

If it ends under £1000, it's mine.

I agree, incredibly cool car, but i've got a feeling it won't be less than a grand, have you noticed you just don't see these anymore when only a few years ago they were common place and everywhere?

One word, Exporters.

If however you do get it for less than 1k good on you mate, that'll be a bargain for sure :D

I have the money to go over that and I know I'll get my money back but part of me says what's the point when I can pick up a good 740 for £500. Plus as classy as it is, Volvo is just in my blood :)

Part of you is an idiot then.......!

740's are just too naff for words these days - their too old to be a credible DD and too young to be collectable unless they're a very early one or one of the full spec cars. They're incredibly old fashioned in design and a big old wallowy barge that doesn't go that well and isn't that cheap to run. Don't get me wrong, in their day they were superb (I should know - I've had a few!), but time marches on and unless it's a pimptastic 1982 760, a 1988/89 740GLE or a late GLT 16v I'd get that 360GLS instead.

I would, but there's 3 of us now. Something bigger is very much required.
