Rupert could well be right re mine getting more abuse than most. I've some pics, prop is fine this time, not found cause yet though. Engine unplumbed and out tomorrow morning if weather not soggy.

Frits, I agree re prop, it's weak. Its the main reason I can't afford to run a slipper yet.

I have a spare prop in the garage so should be ok, just means i'll be on the hunt for another one now as back-up. Mine let go @60mph or so, when going from 4th to 5th. Just felt like i missed the gear and the revs went up with no movement. At 1st i thought it was the clutch but when i looked with the AA dude, you can hear the rubber spinning in the prop.

Hang on to all your dud props for the big souped-up exchange programme that just may well happen one day.

Looks like nothing else is broked. Prop is fine, as is clutch. Weird.... now I'm dubias. Will take more this apart.

Its broken because a dazed tortoise was wandering along a country lane, having awoken fron hibernation far too early because of global climate change.
Chris drove over it, it pooped its tiny tortoise pants, jumped in the air just as you were passing overhead and it cracked your bell end with its rock hard body-helmet. Then it spun off down the road, got stuck upside down and was devoured by fox. Or a gang of no good stoats.

This explains why nothing else was damaged.

And why my mates tortoise hasnt come home.

My guess would be that the engine was twisting up on the knackered mounts, but with the near side bellhousing mount not budging. A long period of this caused the alloy to weaken along the line it finally snapped on.

Check your engine mount brackets (to subframe) carfully. I've had two broken on my 340.

If i'm right, you have one alloy, wich is even weaker.

Frits, I had those off when I dropped the subframe over summer, but... I dont remember giving them a super hard look over so will do that now, thanks.

My thoughts...

I havn't had the pressure plate off of the flywheel yet, but it looks
ok in there. It looks to me as though stress on the clutch arm has
caused this somehow though not sure quite how. Thinking back, I've
been thinking the clutch has been high for a while and that I need to
adjust it, but a quick think in my head makes me think this is
opposite to the symptom of that crack being there.

For reference, on this pic

My left hand is at 1oClock, right hand at 10oClock, from crack at 12oClock
12 - Crack
12:30 - Hole that clutch cable outer stops in, activation arm behind
1 - Left Hand, obscuring tiny bolt that holds cover/inspection plate
onto bellhousing, doesnt hold bellhousing onto block
3 - Other tiny bolt as 1oClock
4:30 - Bolt onto block
5:30 - Bolt onto block, then 2 of the 3 starter bolts can be seen
7 - Bell housing to block bolt
7:30 - Crank position sensor bolt1
8:30 - Crank pos bolt2, bell housing to block bolt
9:30 - Bell housing to block bolt
11:30 - Bell housing to block bolt

So... Only 2 of those critical bolts, rather than other things bolts
(4:30 and 5:30) hold the entire thing onto the block, soooo. I think
that 6 till 12 are holding onto the block, and the actual useful bit
has been hinging about the crack point which is what caused my prop to
go too.

So, next question... apart from possible tortoises (which is currently the only thought of theory that makes sense) why did it crack? I reckon I may have hit VTack

I reckon somebody told it you were going to put it on a track and it didn't like the sound of that.

I meant to ask earlier, how far round does the crack go? it looks like it's heading for the starter that clearly doesn't fit but I can't tell how close it gets to being in two pieces.
