Evoman, I don't remember seeing Swansea Uni, but they have an FS team, I would have thought they were there. Shame about your team experience, it can be a bit anal sometimes with the precision. But bugger to them, they still (in theory) will get the car built etc, and so long as your in it for the motorsport experience, who cares what they think/do. Either way, if you get the chance, I'd definitely say you should go, as its great fun and interesting too.

I am not too bothered about the precision, i like it, but they were just nerds lol! ye I think i'll give it another go, I did find out two guys that arent so nerdy do it. I have a feeling they were taking a break one season to biuld a totally new car so they come back and beat everyone If all goes to plan in the next couple of weeks though i wont be in uni next year

I am meant to be doing a placement BUT the contract of work the company was to do has been delayed and so I may not be able to start. Just got to wait as see, Im still really keen to do the placement as its automotive

Excellent, fingers crossed! What company? I'm still in two minds whether to do one or not, as I'm a lil behind after doing 3 years of college instead of 2, and a foundation year on top of that. I'm more than likely going to do a placement though, as it'll be very good to gain some proper experience.

Next project for the car is an inlet adaptor for the air filter, as the ghetto "stretched tights" is working, but it is a little bit too ghetto. That, and I'd feel a lot more comfortable with an actual filter on it. It'll be 3d printed out of thermoset plastic. Seeing how well the plastic coolant pipe bracket held up, this should have no problem at surviving on the inlet side. I'll use some ali flexi ducting between the plate and filter, so I can locate the filter closer to the front of the car.

How much is this 3D printing going to cost you?

Its a company called treharne that specailise in powertrain electronics, they alot of work for jaguar land rover but they are a small company (one reason I choose to take their offer) however that had its risks.

Printing is free, as it's the uni's, so doesn't cost me anything.

The company sounds great, should be great fun!

Got the offending clutch output shaft, so that's going to be replaced, and I should have a custom prop made up in time for Retro Rides in August.

Here you can see the splines, worn in the centre. Before it was removed from the donor car, There must have been a prop failure some time in it's life before hand. I fitted it to mine thinking it would be ok, as there is spline either side of the worn area. Alas this was not the case!



So I'm still searching and saving, but hopefully will be driving the beast again soon. For now, I leave you with a sunset pick I found.

Like I said the other day bud, be sure your prop is aligned when it goes back on. You may have engine mount issues.

Aye. I'm gonna nab Chris's idea of a laser tool, and use that to get it all lined up. Since I have got 2 props that are now defunct, I'll use an end off one of them.

Spent today machining the first top mount today. I figured as my car won't be used/can't be used for a good while, I'd strip and rebuild the suspension, so managed to measure the top mount. When I get paid, I'll start wacking together some coilover struts too.

So first top mount done, took the best part of 6 hours of turning to do it, the size of the cylinder of billet Ali was pretty massive. It was worth it though, came out really well, and it all fits right too. When I do the next one, I'll give the underside a small lip so it can locate in the rubber plate that sits between top mount and bearing. I'll also do this for the one I've just done.

Only downer is I some how (with my gorilla hands) managed to stuff the top damper thread, so I'll have to re-thread that some how.

but hey! Fits well! (I could have gone for a larger diameter on the top looking at it, but it's done now)


Also got the filter adaptor printed up. Fits and seals good, and will hopefully flow nicely. I need a bit of pipe to re-locate the filter though, as there's only just not enough room to fit the filter on to it.

*very* nice! Sorry I've been so lame on dimensions for you, not been home for ages.How did you find turning the internal radius in the top mount? Only thing I'd be wary of is how much you are going to vibrate everything else in the subframe, but without trying it

Cheers Chris ta! Don't worry bout the dimensions, I had a full day at hand, so I had the time top strip it down. Which bit are you asking about radius wise? I chamfered the edges if that's what your asking. I'm not skilled enough to get a smooth radius on the edges.

And yeah, the thought of forces going else where had crossed my mind, but if you don't try, you'll never know!
