Thanks Mac-thought it might have been a 3.82/1.
I think I'll have to Pm you about pinions in the future-so prepare yourself

I have a 3.91 box sat in the back of my 240...from an 81 343.
I thought the 4.51 was the vario diff? If it did indeed come in a manual, that would suggest that that diff fits in both (or perhaps more likely they happened to have the same number of teeth in two totally different diffs!)
cheers

All vario diffs were indeed 4.51:1 but I have a note in my 'green book' that the same ratio was an option on the Scandinavian marketwith both M45 and M47. Having said that I've just had a good trawl through 'Vardis' and can't find any reference to such a beast. (my Vardis only goes back to 85 though).
Safest to regard manual 4.51 as apophrycal (note is handwritten) and ignore.
(note is in my handwriting but I can't remember when I wrote it or why!).

might be worth putting that on my old m45r and seeing if it'll make it to 50.

mac, regarding the 'handy b' i played tightening it up today and theres no difference between how it was and it tightened as far as my sockets will reach (perhaps 20mm of thread sticking out). could the broken handle perhaps be the cause? it still holds but it needs 6 clicks instead of the prescribed 3 or 4.

easy get it upto 100mph with a 4.78@6000 rpm'ish[in a 360] ! it would be a tad noisey though

why any1 would want to go more than 100mph beats me anyway! if i wanted to go fast i would fit my 3.27......
3 ratio's homologated for 360's in rallying are;
4.77
4.2
3.64

by the way
4.78 is the earlier crown-the smaller type.
4.77 is the larger heavy duty crown.
