Being a rallier, I don't know much about the track rules, but I'd imagine the safety kit you'd need would be fairly similar:

Roll Cage - several hundred pounds, would need to be specially fabricated for the 300

Extinguishers - a couple of hundred for a good set up I think

Seat(s) & Belts - 2-300 for a good seat, 100+ for a proper 4-6 point harness

etc, etc....

foggyjames wrote:Interesting stuff chaps. What about if the car was originally equipped with sidedrafts - do you have to take them off?! Am I reading right that if it wasn't turbo from the factory, you can't +t? How about enlarging displacement? There's the 2.5 stroker option for the B230... ;) In fact, car-ising a Volvo Penta AQ171C or D would be spot on - 2.5 16v redblock ready-built.

The smart money appears to be on dropping in a B230FB (late 2.3 with the 'adaptive' EMS, 531 head, and relatively hot cam....131bhp, but with easy upgradability on stock EMS), then +16v-ing it when funds allow. Start stockpiling those 16v heads!
No, the rules always used to be that non-compliant things like turbos, twin carbs, 16v engines etc were allowed if they were standard, by putting the car into the 'standard production' class. This avoided a lot of those restrictions, but instead restricted the amount the car could be modified. This class is being scrapped from the end of the year, and they are instead allowing 16v engines to be used, providing they comply with the rest of the rules, and use the original injection system.

I think I read that Safety Devices do a cage for the 300? No? Seem's a bit odd as they're not a popular rally choice :)

Kev Strong has Safety Devices logos on his cage, but they could just be stickers I guess. I'm sure I know of someone who had SD custom make one for them (perhaps those guys with the rally 1.4?).

cheers

Talking of cages, my Uncle could probably make a cage, he used to work for a top rally team, and seemed pretty interested in doing one for a 300 when I spoke to him. His welding is super, an absolute top job, he's incredibly thorough. So, if anyone is interested and doesn't want to be forced to buy the only one available.... give me a shout.

You can get roll cage for rather cheap, it just pile of bent tubes, but problem what is going to be cost some is putting it to car, it takes somewhat long time as interior is needed to be taken out, some modifying possible needed to dashboard, then all mounting points need to be drilled, plates welded to mounting points, cage need to be bolted in, then part of cage need to be welded in a car, if you like to have interior still with roll cage it is going to be even more challenging and expensive.

200-400 for a cage and at least 500 for installing it, that is why most do installing by them selfs, but that is not always a option.

Nick,

do you know if LPG is allowed for rallying?
I could be interested in building a car but only if LPG would be allowed.

Also do the cages need to be make to certain specs etc?

I've no idea about LPG, I'l try and remember to have a look. Cages have to be built to a spec, there are diagrams and minimum thicknesses/diameters of the tubes.
