Glad you think it will work. Looking forward to seeing it all done!! I looked into this conversion a while back and decided to go for the 1.7 route as i had the engine.

I worked out that if it got there (which it wouldn't) a 3.36 car is geared for bang-on 160mph at 6500rpm, while a 3.82 car is limited to about 141mph. I reckon my NA car will get to 140 with the shorter gears and the forthcoming go-faster goodies. Best so far is somewhere a fair way off the top of the scale (120), sustained...140hp on 3.36 gears.
I'm curious regarding why...on a 5 speed box, I'd only use a 3.36 diff for fuel economy / sustained motorway crusing. For a 'fun' car with less than 'crazy' power, I'd run shorter gears for sure.
200+bhp in a sub 1000kg car is enough beleive me!my nova has 165 odd bhp and will easily pull the limiter in 5th(145mph GPS readings). IIRC the 340 aint too much heavier and with extra torque and power itll fly along.the reason is i do a road trip every year now,this year in 10 days we went through holland france belgium germany(nurburgring!) switzerland and italy(italian f1 gp) and back!theres a LOT of motorway mileage there and sometimes over 500 miles a day!you need a high average speed on the autobahns etc!
Absolutely agreed - when I drop my 2.3 turbo lump in, I'll go back to the 3.36 diff'd box, as it'll be better for longer journeys, and with that much power, it'll move well enough for daily driver usage
I was under the impression that this thing might be more track day toy than road car, but if it'll be used long-distance...well at all really, I totally see the motivation in the low diff. Having said that, given that an injection 360 (with only 10hp more, but the notable difference in diff ratio) is a fair bit more perky on the motorway, perhaps it will be a bit of a mixed blessing with the GTT motor, which will probably be lacking in 'cruising' grunt, but go like a bat out of hell when pushed a little?
1.7 cars have the right casing (360 boxes aren't a drop-in), and came with a 3.64 or 3.45 depending on market (not sure which we got...suspect the 3.64). Perhaps a good compromise?
We got 3.64's in our 1.7's, I had to sort all the gearing stuff when I was playing around with those power curves.
I'm going to swap mine when I get my backside in gear, so put my 3.82 from my 1.4 into my 1.7, to make it a much nippier rally car (and drop 12" mini steelies on for autotests, to make it even nippier), and put the 3.64 from my 1.7 into the 1.7 turbo'd 1.4.
I reckon... as long as brakes are standard. Only one way to find out! Only thing I'm worried about is I won't get enough traction from thin 12's, when the gearing is switched to uber nippy like that
Hmm.. actually they might well do - I was thinking 360s with a 9"(?) drum. I reckon it'd be pretty close with a 12" rim. They fill up the 13" steelies quite well.
personally greg, as much as i love the GTT lump, for a long geared long distance motor, id not be using a big boost GTT lump.
they great engines, but dont think suit that setup.
they suit sort geared screamers, not long treks and high speed.
my old GTT using to happily go off the clock at 140 in a blink of an eye and used to do it all the time (it was that low geared that itd accel to there dead quick so not holding it at full load for long), but id still not drive it thousands of miles round europe, lol.
