Any chance you can cut out and refit metal rather than plating? You'll only be putting off the inevitable otherwise!
I know, nothing like a plate welded over a hole to create a water trap  On most of the other areas I have done I've cut out the rust and welded up to the edge, like on the valance and sills where I want the finish to look smooth. I'll try to do it here too.

Out of interest, how thick is the body metal? I'm thinking 1mm steel would be adequate to buy?

I'm not sure, I've not measured it, 1mm looks about right. I don't know if all the steel is the same thickness all over or if some parts are thicker than others.

Thanks for the info on poly bushes Dai, I might as well change them while I'm there and check for rust. I'll be in touch about them soon.

My welding exploits so far suggest that the bonnet skin is thicker than the material used for the front wings.

Since my last post I've been busy with other things and apart from painting the petrol tank I've not done much :( Untill the last few nights that is :) On Saturday I started welding the cross member in front of the fuel tank and tonight I finished it off and painted the new patches. I decided to patch over the holes rather than try to cut out all the old metal, it just takes too long I have 340's stacking up in the garden to be fixed!

Just got to paint on the underseal and get the fuel tank back on. A few pipes/clips need replacing as it used to leak petrol everywhere before.

There's nothing wrong with that approach as long as you're willing to revisit that area in a few years time.

Oh...ready for that GLS yet, by the way? Might be coming up your way with a trailer next weekend...

cheers

Not yet! I'm waiting to see how well the GL goes with the M.O.T. to see if my welding skills are up to it. I'm going to see if I can get lots of rustproofing wax stuff sprayed in through the drain holes near the welding on the GL to protect the inside. It's going to be a daily driver and I won't be too worried about taking it out in all weathers but I won't be using 'every' day or for huge mileages so I expect the welding will last a while (I'll probably take it off the road for 2 or 3 months over winter anyway due to road tax costs and no caravan towing required, unless we get lots of snow again  ).
I've managed to collect a few panels for the MK1 it but I still need to have a good look at the door situation. It's taking me ages to get the GL done cos I keep having other stuff to do and I'm busy with work at the moment. (The cold winter didn't help either, can't wait till summer!).

James, I'll give a call or PM about the GLS, there are number of bits that could be usefull, thanks

Andy

Sounds good Andy. You might as well have the whole car to strip. I don't want much for it, and I can deliver it to your door on a trailer next weekend (Sat 8th). I wouldn't mind a few bits and bobs off it once you've started taking it apart, but we can discuss that come the time...

cheers

Maybe that's "one of the few bits and bobs he needs to keep off it".

Haha...might be ;)

If it appeases you, Steve, I found that chrome trim you need. Brand spankers...and it's the right piece.

cheers

James

Ah well, it's the wrong type of carb anyway ;) I'll go with the trim though :)
