I don't think so mate, the one that has the D16 in is the B172 300 book... well, the cam belt swap is listed for both in that book anyway. I won't say I havn't, as I came across a few more the other day that I had forgotten about, but I don't think there were any 400 ones.
One slightly off-the-wall thing to check is that it isn't the immobiliser playing up. Many will create this exact effect - the car will start, then stall after a few moments, to make a thief think the car is broken. I know 940s do this.
The 440 doesnt have an immobiliser as there is no warning light on the dash and no remote central locking. the diesels tend to be quite low spec and mine doesnt even have tinted windows!
Im getting the car towed to my friends garage where we can do some more thorough testing and get out the rain!! its rained since sunday all the time!!! Grrrrr
