Luckily Jason knows of a cheap 531 head available just down the road from him
Having had a re-read through of the thread I think there may be some benefit to be had in swapping to a 531 head and V cam if you're still planning on using a bigger carb. That will need to be rejetted/tuned anyway, so may as well get it tuned to a better flowing head and slightly lairier cam. It's will also give you the opportunity to renew the head gasket, valve stem seals, do a decoke and re-seat the valves to make sure everything is in tip-top condition ready for some rallying abuse.
If it was just a case of putting the head on a standard carb'd (or even EFI) car I would say it's not worth the hassle.
I'm assuming, of course, the 531 head WILL just bolt on the the B200 block. Can anyone confirm this for definate yet?

Just a quick update on the PTF front, fitted some new front springs and gave most of the front end a checkover which has really tightened her up (just need some adjustable dampers now). Fitted a sump guard made from a 6mm Al roadsign (yes a roadsign, lol). Got some bucket seats fitted along with some rally bits and spotlights, and got the engine to a driveable state (though it looks like a jump to 2.3l power is on the cards soon). Next up is some open alloys and decent rubber and also a full brake refresh (got a bit of fair bit of fade despite trying to brake properly and not trail!)
Plenty more to come and probably some pictures soon
Mini update - maybe some pics to follow when my house internet begins working!
Finally got round to raiding carls garage and pillaging all his remaining parts as well as a nice shiny (well, complete at least) b230fb. I scrapped the idea of tuning the gle engine as it didn't seem worth it in the end when a b230 just bolts in. Looks like I will be sticking that in at some point in early summer but until then its getting a bit of a work over and hopefully most parts will be renewed and where possible improved.
I may also be picking up a Glt diff and an extra set of leafsprings on the cheap to give a bit more go and keep her stiffer in the corners. Most desparately needed upgrade is tyres though! (regardless of what other people say, running standardish tyres the brakes are far more than is necessary to lock up and I have yet to experience any fade on the 4 events I have done)
More soon with some pictures!
-also looking for an LH 2.4 loom etc from 940/240 for really cheap so if anybody feels especially nice and one pops up I am looking for a bit of charity on that front I have a brand new D cam which I'm looking to swap or part exchange for bits too!
You want the loom from a 240...a very late one...with a B200F or B230F. The LH2.4 ECUs from any B230 should be close enough.
I'd run a 3.82:1 diff from a 1.4 5 speed on an NA car, especially for rallying. Nice hot cam, short diff, tasty exhaust...mmm!
Sounds like it'll be a nice motor when done. I've never had an issue with braking power...but thermal capacity can be a problem. I've *just* managed to get into brake fade with on-road use in the 360...but then I'm fairly light on the brakes.
Just a quick update (will start a project type thread soon), started stripping down the engine I got from carl and had a few bits carefully blasted and cleaned up, should look really good when its all done. Heres a quick taster:-
from this:

(apologies for rubbish phone camera)
also turns out that the cam cover on that engine was an accident waiting to happen, as under the paint there was a massive crack so it was lucky I got it cleaned up!
dad works in an R&D department so if he goes in a bit early he can use some of the machines for free, and also hopefully soon I can get steel plate precision laser cut to my solidworks drawings
Also got some other brackets blasted, and the next cam cover is getting stripped and powder coated in a nice red colour
Makes getting things like that done easy when it would have cost me £20-30 to have a shop do an item that intricate. Can't wait til I get my paws on a shiny new mig welder at some point in the future, then the fun really starts
