Hey, a beer exchange is a great idea! There must be loads of good British ales that aren't available there.

Not even newcastle broon? You can even buy that on draught in Clint Eastwood's bar in California. (really not a joke).

Yeah you're right. You can get that in the odd Irish pub, but not in your standard "Kneipe" ...

I'm in the heart of the Black Country - the home of Good Beer. Perhaps we should organise a Belts and Beer weekend with cheese and onion cobs and black pudding thrown in for good measure...

I'm still struggling with belts - I did try to buy the ones off the guy in Cornwall but it didn't quite work-out unfortunately. Would anyone happen to know if Daf / Volvo 66 belts will fit?

In the meantime, I still haven't received the logbook for the car and according to the DVLA the guy I bought it off hasn't sent it in although he says he has so giving him the benefit of the doubt it probably got lost in the post. The car wasn't registered in his name as he'd acquired it from the estate of the original elderly owner and didn't bother to notify acquisition so technically he has nothing to lose by not bothering to send it off. Fortunately he gave me the the green 'new keeper' slip so I can apply for a new logbook without having to pay the £25 fee.

On a positive note, I've given the car a good clean and it looks very presentable. I've arranged for a local bodyshop to tidy-up the front valance once I've sorted-out the transmission and then I'll hopefully make it to a few meets. Until then, the Yugo soldiers on regardless....

Turning into a bit of an epic saga, this belt carry on.
Good plan for the beer though.
A run over the the (in)continent with a car full of ale is nailed on for the summer.
Well im going anyway.

Project Express Logistical Intoxication enters planning stage.................

Daf 46, Daf 66, Volvo 66, Volvo 34x... tis all the same beltwise. I don't know what you're after (new or used belts) but if you're opting for some good second hand ones, please make sure that their turning direction has been marked, or otherwise they're just plain useless. I'd still go for new stock though. Those new kevlar-strengthened belts live for ages when looked after properly.

Since you've had some problems locating where you should measure your clutch plate clearance, here's a handy pic. Please note you should check it at three different points (between every two shims that is) like Mr Haynes says. You can either crank the engine or turn the wheels, what works best for you. All these pics were taken on a very useful 'short introduction to the variomatic and its foibles'-day I've been to recently. The other photos show the actual process of changing a belt: there's the nice way of doing it with a huge clamp, or a way that's a bit more violent. On the plus side, using any old bit of scaffolding (preferably a piece that's 3 to 4 ft long) to get your secondary transmission's cooperation takes half as much time
