Aye, the Strombergs fitted are never going to made as much power as DCOE's, but are a great mid ground. Early redblocks had twin Strombergs as their performance option (would Sir like one carb or two?) and I think it's a great period mod, plus they are gorgeous to actually drive unlike DCOE's, which you either have at full throttle or nothing at which point you might as well have a turbo

DCOEs are just as progressive as SUs (etc)...as long as they're sized appropriately and jetted correctly. Mine are well sized (so nicely progressive when in a range where they're well tuned!), but badly tuned at the low end. Above 3000rpm they're lovely and progressive. Generally they get "lumpy" if you go overboard with the venturi sizes...there of course being a trade-off between driveability and outright power.
Accordingly to the conventional wisdom, mine (R-Sport spec) are set up ideally for 1.4-1.5 litre engine - 40s with 32mm chokes / venturis fitted. I "ought" to be running 45s with 36 or 38mm venturis. I'm probably giving away some peak power, but it does make them very nice for everyday usage. Well...it would do if I adjusted / changed the emulsion tubes...
cheers
James
