It's still not well. 75mph was all I had today. Lunchtime tinkering ahoy...! I think the head may be toast, so a B14.4E swap is on the cards. Luckily I happen to have Nessy on the drive breaking, so it will be a (relatively) painless swap.
Oh, and the drive in to work today was less hilarious than the cruise up the A1 last night, so I think a back-box swap is in order ASAP.
cheers
James

To be fair you'll be doing it a big favour swapping in a 14.4E with Renix... unleaded and electronic ignition ftw!
Chuck the engine in the boot and do the swap at Griz's

If it's going to get done, it'll get done before then, I think. I'd like to keep the original engine if I can. There are two problems... intermittent lumpy running (which is likely to be carb related, but I'm concious that if the spark plug got burnt up...), and the spark plug thread issue. If it's at all questionable, I'd rather replace the engine now while it's relatively easy for me, than leave it for someone else to have a big problem with in 6 months time.
I've just found a huge air leak (on the vacuum side of the breather arrangement - the hoses both sides of the restrictor had big splits in them), which would explain the off-idle hesitancy John reported...and we also had some fun with. There's a bit of tweaking and vacuum leak hunting to be done, but it's a big step in the right direction. It's also allowed me to drop the idle speed below about 1500rpm! The idle speed screw was wound in so far that once that leak was plugged, it was barely running...2-300rpm?
I'm having a great time with it

I'll report back after my drive home on whether that leaning out was blunting the top end, or if there's a further problem.
cheers
James

Great news, Mark! Are there pictures yet?
I sorted out the exhaust last night. It got a bit late to start posting pics, but I should have an update tonight. I think I'll branch this off into a project thread a bit later.
cheers
