Probably but it would be a significant engineering job to get the clutch output shaft to mate. Also The 340 drive shaft is a bit temperamental if not fitted correctly, they are in short supply.
You are better going for a 360 and changing to a 2.3 or even a 2.3 turbo. The 360 drive is good for 250bhp.
It is possible to fit the 360 drive to a 340 but its alot more work. The B200s from the 700/900 need some 360 engine parts to fit anyway.
Otherwise you can drop in a 1.7 easily, or some of the Renault more powerful engines.
340 = Renault engines
360 = Volvo Engines

thanks ride_on
that is the same thing my mechanic said to fix 360 Propeller shaft and a gear Box
i just want to know the maximum bhp that a Volvo 340 supports and is the 1.7 has the same propeller shaft & gear box of a 1.4?
one last question ,is there any way that we could identify a 360 gear box (from the physical appearance or any numbers?)
Cheers

The gearbox and diff are essentially the same between 360+340, bar various 4/5 speed boxes and diff ratios, just the input shaft and front casing is slightly different to fit the torque tube+drive shaft on the 360. The 360 has a solid drive shaft with support bearings inside the torque tube.
The drive shaft and gearboxes are identical between 1.4 and 1.7, but some years the 1.4 DLs are 4 speed, which uses a longer diff to keep the same overall dimensions. I think the bell housing is the same as well, but I'm not 100% sure.
There are some threads around here about 340 drive shaft limits I don't know myself, if I was to guess I would say 150bhp. I seem to remember coming to the conclusion that the limit was the engine and gearbox mounting system and some on here had really powerful engines that seemed to be twisting up the wobbly links (like twisting a rope), whereas in 360s the torque tube solidly connects the engine and gearbox, there are no rubber parts in the linkage. I've always stuck with 360s when I had the choice as the 2.3 turbo conversion is much more attractive to me.
