Is it normal that a 340 1.4 engine vibrating during throttle and idle or should it be smooth. I had a mechanic to check it, he also said all the 340s has the same vibration
Am worried that vibration will cause my propeller shaft to break, it would be a disaster if it breaks during the morning traffic
Is there any way to make the propeller shaft fool proof?
Generally I would say it should be smooth, but of course there is always some vibration. To say its normal is not true for a good engine, but wear will gradually make it a little rougher during full power not idle.
I doubt it would affect the prop shaft but couldn't be sure. If it can survive banging the clutch out with high revs (which all good cars can) then it should be able to survive anything the engine roughness throws at it. Of course corrosion and poor assembly can cause weaknesses.
As griffo says if the engine mount is damaged or broken the exhaust or engine maybe toughing the car body making it seem very rough. If you are getting some kind of thumping then maybe something more serious but it is unusual.
what year is it?
the <86 cars had the straight up engine mounts on the front, these ar notorious to fail.
cvt/manual doesn't matter though.
if the mounts sag out the first thing you'll notice is the downpipe hitting the subframe.
best way to test whether a B14 shakes too much is get it at 1100rpm, the engine should sit deadflat and is not allowed to move around, if it's still shakes or has a shake from time to time; it's time for a full service (and a carefull check to the engine mounts).
