1.4 power
1.4 power
hey all. I don't know what people on this forum are like about people using 300's for drifting, but thats the reason I want one next year. I turn 17 in July, and want a 1.4 340, but I don't think a standard 1.4 will be powerful enough for drifting. so I was wondering if there's any semi achievable ways of getting power up. my mate reckons that a straight through exhaust, weber 45 carb, better cam and a pretty open filter will give me enough power. any suggestions and opinions will be appreciated. oh yeah, I want a 1.4 because I don't think I'll be able to insure the 1.7 or the 2.0 360. cheers. james.
Re: 1.4 power
You don't necessarily need power, 1.4s will drift if you weld the diff (google that). HOWEVER, I'd be really careful you being a new driver. I, along with most drivers have all been there. when you've been driving for a few months you will feel invincible. Of course because I'd done stock car racing at 14 I was an amazing driver! Not.
Inexperienced driver + welded diff = asking for trouble. I'd get a 1.4, run it around standard for 6 months while you get used to rwd. Play around when it rains, learning about how the car reacts in the wet (it will drift in the wet) and then when you can prove to yourself you have basic car skills, weld it up.
Oh and forgive the patronising, but don't drift on the street, you'll hurt someone. Save it for private land, tracks and fields.
And declare your mods to insurers.
Have fun!
P.S: Don't worry about engine mods for the now, there's not much you can get out of a 1.4 without changing pretty important and expensive stuff.

yeah I'm never going to drift on the roads, I'm not your average teenager

Re: 1.4 power
as Speedy says,
tuning a stock B14 is definatly going to hurt your wallet, i've rebuild my 1.4 and turbocharged it; if all goes to plan it should break 200bhp barrier next spring. and you probably don't even want to know what money/work is nescassary to get a 1.4 there...
but.. a stock 300 is a good startingpoint to build from and learn how to drift and get better at it. steeringresponce and controlling ability for a drift is really good for our little RWD monsters, even totally stock. i'd concentrate on some wheels and a proper suspension first to make the car more controllable and handle better. allready should give you enough fun, when serviced well the B14's actually provide enough power to do some proper skidding

Yep! Footman James won't do it over the phone though for under 25s so give them a ring. Just remember that you don't earn NCB on classic policies.bubblesjs wrote:do 34/60s qualify for classic insurance now or not?

I never knew that.Speedy88 wrote: Just remember that you don't earn NCB on classic policies.

Re: 1.4 power
Declaring engine mods to your insurers will cost you more money, for less horsepower, than a 1.7. As a aside, a 1.4 will never flow enough air to need a 45, that along with a straight through will cost you any ability the thing has to drive normally, i.e. not at WOT.

Re: 1.4 power
you dont need any extra power a decent serviced 1.4 will drift just very skiiny tyres i fount 155s my favourite with about 80psi in them no joke in dry weather just fine check out my project at the beginning bit haha
but like others have said a welded diff has to be driven with respect as they can soon have you if your not care full

Re: 1.4 power
I slide my 1.7 when appropriate, e.g. entering (known empty) petrol station on full opposite lock.
my old 1.4 was just as good really, not slower by any discernable margin in low gears and it's pushrod engine so you can't break it even if you try.
the most important thing in controlling slides is fine throttle control, that comes with practice and well tuned/oiled carb, accelerator cable and pedal.
overinflating tyres is a must or the sidewalls will drag underneath the wheel and get shredded up, and you probably won't notice until a Tyre blows out(i learned this the scary way) Extra pressure keeps them square with the road even when skidding completely sideways.

Ha ha! KABOOOM! Nice fireworks mind.theo2468 wrote:Drifting into a petty station, fuck that!! So many risks
On topic, mine slides in the wet with an open diff (1.4), in the dry, it obviously doesn't.

Yeah
Do the wheels properly spin when you've fit the back end out?

Insurance is very fickle.
