gearbox and diff removal/refitting

Post by samueljon »

over the weekend i got the dif away from the gearbox....

looking at it it looks like they have a gasket between the 2, where can you get replacements for these?

Buy a piece of gasket paper and cut one yourself. It's an easy shape and not very available. There are gasket drawings available on the forum I think and otherwise just outline the old one and cut it in the same shape.

Yes, no problem. It doesn't really get hot in there so that'll work.

If its 4 speed that gasket thickness is used in the calculation for the shim thickness that gives some of the shaft bearing pre-loads. So you have to use a mechanically stable gasket and know the end thickness.

Not sure about 5 speed, doesn't seem to be any shims on the diff side. maybe they are on the main-5th gear housing joint (still havn't got that off yet).

All the gaskets are still available for the M47 (5 speed) gearbox from Volvo. They're not expensive but do take some time to come from Sweden.

Parts numbers (courtesy of Mac)

Front cover to main case 1340989
Side (top) cover to case 1340991
Main case to 5th gear case 1340992
diff case to 5th gear case 1340993

Mac does a kit for replacing the diff cover gasket.
