Race updates :)

Post by Lonewolf »

About a month ago (the sports club were lazy in sending the last set of results out) went to local khana-x. Wasn't a quick day, water+grass+half bald road tyres=no speed, no grip, but loads of fun. I probably would have taken 2nd place in my class except i screwed the 1st course up(missed a flag) which put me 45 seconds behind everyone in my class(alot when each course lasts 45-50 seconds), but made up 30 seconds over the rest of the courses and ended up 5th in class. Blew exhaust flange gasket so had to put up with the machine gun backfires on the way home. And got some strange looks from folks who dont know what a badly leaking exhaust sounds like (volvos shouldn't sound like that! oh well all good things come to an end)

Went up to armidale on sunday for the motorkhana theat was held on the skidpan, 37 entries all up. There was some powerful cars there too: WRX, Skyline, 2 entries for a turbo Silvia, a worked turbo datsun, 2 Holden V8's, one crazy yellow custom car named 'JAWS'.
I think i went well got 12th outright(10th in class). I must say i was impressed with my time on the 3rd course, which i held the second quickest time and was only .9sec behind 1st(silvia), the only course nobody got on video!!! I 'almost' felt sorry for the guys who thought they were king sh!t owning a skyline and wrx and being beat by a old boxy volvo by several seconds, almost. GO VOLVO!!!

Since last time,

Went to kempsey a fortnight ago, i'd rather forget that i went there lol, i was the only person there with normal road tyres on, and after half the field had done their first run, and turned the lush grass into a dirt track, the heavens opened and turned the dirt track into a mud pit... was rather frustrating, even to the point of a WRX almost bogging down, but omg, talk about understeer... here comes the corner, theres the corner, there goes the corner... i got 2nd last and spend 2hrs cleaning mud, clay and grass clumps off the car, but it was good fun,

Went to Armidale skidpan again today for regional championship, was rather interesting trip there, the snow started about half way there(i had never seen snow before today), kangaroo decided to jump out on the road in front of me, and a tree fell on the road also... anyway we finally got there, and after learning at kempsey how to use the handbrake, i must say i was somewhat more competative... temporarily got fastest time on 3 of the 8 courses (until one or 2 of the cars from the last half of the field topped it ) and finished 4th outright (28 competitors), and got 1st in my class... My friend got 1st outright, and the publicity officer of our car club came up and got 2nd outright (both were racing the turbo silvia). So i'm guessing there will be an article in the newspaper or something of the sort.

I will certainly make some of the highlights available(the runs are visually more exciting than the prior ones), though you'll have to excuse the shakey camerawork, it was bloody freezing up there. Can it possibly be hosted by V3M after being checked? Or should i search for somewhere external to host them.

Well done, sounds like you had a good time. Good job on winning your class. That would be interesting to see the highlights and if you can scan any of the newspaper reports too that would be excellent.

Snow, kangaroos and trees........sounds like a difficult trip! I was in a mates car when a wallaby jumped out infront of us here in the UK. That was rather shocking, as neither of us had ever seen a wallaby before...... let alone one free in the wild jumping about in the road........ and no, no one was drunk!

Ok, I'm sure i can get it under 30meg without drama dave

Yes unfortunately kangeroos are much bigger than wallabies.. if you want too see what a kangeroo does to a car, i suggest watching the Bob Jane T-marts Bathurst 1000 from last year(2004)... it will probably be interesting getting an uncut version cause it was pretty crazy what happened but they show what was left of the car afterwards

Luckily we didnt get the snow tree and kangeroo all at once

Lol.

Bad news... i dunno what happened but all the video from the regional championship at armidale is gone, and i've since recorded over that with other stuff (there was some top footage on that, will see if anyone else bothered recording me)

Good news, Some pics from prior events:
Testing the suspension at Mt Brown

My Friends RX-7, Its got a tired motor in it, the volvo did him at the lights a few times, he's a good driver, almost as good as me :P

Armidale Skidpan (First time)

1 reason i got 4th the next time there was an armidale event (This pic was from the first event but, If this car hadnt been here i would have taken 2nd place outright... next time is not far away :) )
http://home.ripway.com/2005-6/329128/EVO360/Silvia.JPG
And heres some of the competition, sometimes a small rwd car helps afterall, cause i did beat them

Good forbid, i was almost about to buy one of these, but you gotta admit its a very nice car, looks like a holden monaro with a wing, but the monaro has a 6L V8 in it, not a 2L AWD Turbo.

Monaro sounds fun, but is it shitty FWD or kick ass RWD? :P

Why they build cars with proper engine in Skippy's country only :(

Ouch, looks like that Aussie auto-x includes some jumping contest too, also looks like they have combined some offroad action to it too :D

Really, looks good and fun sport.

Question, have you any trouble with inner rear wheel spinning at air?

Now what sort of question is THAT? You should know the answer to that (or be able to guess)... The calibra on the other hand, was FWD unless u got the turbo, which was AWD (but someone took the V6 version and did a RWD twin turbo conversion on it.... Nice...)
jtbo wrote:Ouch, looks like that Aussie auto-x includes some jumping contest too, also looks like they have combined some offroad action to it too :D
Thats the khana-x for you.... pick a paddock, any paddock, stick in some flags of random colors in the groud, presto... theres the course... and add some crazies in their cars who want to see;
-who can finish the fastest
-who can throw up the most dust
-who can throw mud on the spectators(when its raining and they put a corner at the start :) )
-who can get their car the dirtiest

Normally its the first 2, if its raining its normally the last 2

Motorkhana's are much the same, but the courses are Much tighter, are usually held on the same terrain, but can be held on a sealed surface (aka armidale skidpan) and raining or not (well as of late anyway) one of the goals has been
- dont get beaten by the volvo :D
jtbo wrote:Question, have you any trouble with inner rear wheel spinning at air?
Inner rear wheel? last time i checked there was only the inner wheels were the spare wheel and the steering wheel, but as for the rear wheels spinning, they dont normally need to be in the air to do so, the ground is slippery.

At corners of track there is inner and outer wheels, inside wheels are usually lifted and will loose grip more easily.
Inner wheel is left when you turn left and right when you turn right.

I feel very frustrated when I drive in tighter corners with decent speed as my innner rear wheel is getting lifted so much that it is no more pushing car forward, just smoking and spinning wildly, car could handle greater speed, but it won't accelerate :(
That is of course also because open diff works that way, but mostly because there is no anti roll bar at rear.

They really should sell Monaros here too, not just those FWD grand mother cars.
