ello, my name is dave, i've come to the decision that i want a volvo 300 this coming spring (2012) i currently drive a VW t25 ex-bundesphere crewcab pickup, i have installed a 1.9td from a vw passat & it go's well but i now need a smaller motor for a daily commuter (long-term) but i will not be going down the route of a modern car! i'm a bit of an old car nut!
RWD is the only way for me its that simple, i dont know alot about volvos other than in the main they seem to be a reliable tough car!
i'm wanting to go down the route of a volvo 300 with just the two hatchback as i cant turn anything longer at the bottom of out entry!!!! my vw dont fit so i want tu be able to use the entry again!
i could do with pointers of what to look for, problom ares etc etc etc want to go for whatever is regarded as the most economical engine in the range
anyhoo off for a look around the forum bring on the love of volvo

Hi mate and welcome.
The 300 is a great car.
1.4 for econemy, cheap tax and easy to inshure
1.7 is a little nippyer
2.0 for a bit more power.
Plenty of experts on here to give you advise.
Take your time and find yourself a good one.
Good luck.
Cheers Mark.

so maybe a 1.4/1.7 is better as a daily! i understand that there is somthing do do with renault with the volvo 300?????
am i stupid to think that one of these is a good choice as a daily-are they reliable enough? i do all my own maintainance on my cars anyway-are parts easy enough to come by?
what should i look for, is there a thread on here of what to look for when buying a
out of curiousity when was the last year of production????
cheers

1991 was the last year of production, but those ones (unless you turn up a rare nice one) will be rotten. Most of the *really* rotten ones have been scrapped now though.
Reliable enough to use as a daily? Well, I do. Mine has other reasons it's not always reliable though, mainly it has twice the stock power. 1.4's are bomb proof, 1.7's are the better engine but require more love. For the money, I'd ignore the running costs and get a 360GLT, the FI system on that means it just works (tm)

nice one chris that sort gives me a fewmore pointers- glad to hear someone else is using one as a daily- i understand what you mean about more-power & unreliabuility, i used to drive a classic mini with a turbocharged motor & intercooler as my daily & it was always causing fueling issues etc etc i got it right in the end through a few rolling road sessions at a place i highley recommend HI-TECH rolling road in oldbury in the west midlands-the guys there are top notch!
i need somthing thats going to just GO every day any weather!!! i go to ireland a few times a year to visit relitives & i have always wanted to visit the nurburgring ring to go in a volvo & drive round it would be awsome!!!! imust admit i was well impressed by a volvo beating a civic type r on youtube-was laughing at those crazy germans LOL
where should i start my search for a

????
is there any mpg fiures for the engines out there-are manuals available for them? haynes or workshop manuals?
i feel a little excited-never had a swedish car before-most of my cars are either minis/metros or vw t25 camers/vans the only sort of modern cars i have owned are a toyota starlet turbo-fast but boring & a MX5 superb cars-really love the mx5 but i need more space to carry some tools & i somtimes go fishing
the reason i am leaning towards a volvo 300 is becasue i have looked at modern cars of various types & they just dont have the room even with the seats folded down that i need to be honest-the only other car that sorta floats my boat is a bmw 3 series touring but i dont really want to be driving an estate!!! & the other car that appeals ot me is a a bit old to use as a daily but i am a determined type person is a triumph herald estate! but the volvo 300 appeals more than a herald as to be fair i want a bit more winter comfort than the old herald can provide LOL
do you uys have a midlands meetup or a yearly 300 meet/show?

Have a look at my sig, but the cars listed presently are a pair of CVT automatics. You will get more out of a manual. If you click on the icons, you'll go over to spritmonitor.de and you can search for various cars there, for some real-world mpgs.
