Hiya all
I Been Looking At Getting A 340 And Dropping The 1.7 Turbo Lump In.
But I Wanted To Know If Anyone Has Put A Big Diesel Engine Such As A D5 into A 340?
If So How Hard Is The Conversion.
Thanks
James

It's an untapped well. T5 conversions are being done currently, but they're taking a while.

Would be VERY awesome.
Think I dared Speedy to do it a while ago.

You'd urgently need to address the prop issues...they make 260lbft of torque. I'd start with a 360.
It's a whole world of electrical hell, too. You'd need almost the complete loom from the donor, or it'll have a hissy fit because there's no security computer, etc...
The earlier Audi 5-pot (badged as TDI and later 2.5D...found in 850s, S/V70s, and S80s and early P2 V70s) is a much easier swap...makes nearly as much power (140bhp vs 163bhp), and the economy numbers are very similar.
If you don't specifically want the 5-pot awesomeness, I'd fit a VW 1.9TDI, honestly. Smaller, lighter, better on fuel, and a 110bhp one (higher power versions are PDs...so a little more complex?) would do a decent job of keeping up with a valver, I reckon.
cheers
James

Oh sorry, I meant stupidity.

In all seriousness, I did look into the 360 D5 idea but it really is a massive hole of misery, as Foggy says.
Even the 340/s40 diesel idea would be much of the same. In my mind I'd rather find an old mechanical diesel that fits (peugeot or izuzu or something?). At least then I'd have very certain mechanical problems to overcome rather than very uncertain electrical problems.

Isuzu 1.7TD or 2.8TDI would be frickin epic.

Jesus, a 2.8TD in a 300 would be like trying to turn a tanker! At least a D5 is all-alloy. The 1.7 is a great idea, though.
The 440 TD lump is pretty much a bolt-in for a 340...just a shame about the prop!

The prop problem can be easily worked around. I just can't see the 440 TD being a viable option with only 90hp. I guess the psi could be upp'd but then you're only into the low end of 100hp.

That was more a response to the earlier mention of the S40 TD lump, which is similarly flat. The Izuzu lump is in the same category...and of course the XUD. Solid, yes. Potent...not really.
Personally, I'd go with the VW 1.9 (in 110+bhp form), or the Audi 5-pot from the 850, etc, if you want exotic sounds without the pain of the D5.
cheers

Negatory, I've found the S40 lump incorrectly given low figures. After digging I've found it's actually got about 130bhp standard but you've got to find the correct engine in order to get that (and not confuse it with the F8 engine). It's the best engine apart from the electrical side. I was thinking VW isn't a bad idea. Audi... interesting. Also izuzu or Peugeot in turbo form can be "fixed" with a slightly altered turbo. Sure the fuel won't be fantastic right up there at full boost, but keep it sensible and you'll see the right numbers when you want to.

Christ, I'd love to drop a VW 1.9 TDi in my 360.
I'd need to get a garage to do it for me, how much labour do you think the swap would cost at a good indie garage? A day? 2 days?
Hmm.
Anyone want my 1986 2.0i B200 engine with 38k on the clock??
