locks this time, 2 questions.

can central locking be fitted to an un central locking car? if so is it easy also i have what appears to be a door lock where the rear doors are on a 5 door car. i only have 3 doors. Anyone else have more locks than doors?

yes. its pretty easy. i dont understand yoru 2nd question.. is the lock on the bodywork near the filler cap? if so its a key for an alarm

if you start at the drivers door handle its about 3 inches towards the back of car in mostly a straight line. it doesn't accept the driving key.

if i installed central locking would i need a differnt key and is 340 CL reliable. a friend has similar aged 205 with central locking and it throws regular fits and generally pisses about. another friend with a fiesta's central locking throws fits whilst he drives along some times.

has anyone ever tried to repair the outside door handle mechanism. my fingers appear far to short and don't appear to have nearly enough joints...

either that or its the locking petrol cap LOL

the petrol cap has its own lock. i thought for a while its like a stick on false lock but it seems fairly firmly attached. there is a sticker in the window that claims the 'car is fitted with an electronic burglar alarm' but this is a lie.

that lock is the alarm. it was often futher back

the central locking is reliable, but the motors can fail - fortunately they are easy to come by. i dont know if 5 door will fit 3 door but i would imagine they will. the wiring may be a pig to get in.

I don't understand how the extra lock functions as an alarm?

I've looked at the door handle mechanism and it appears to have lost a bolt that fits between a brassy coloured arm and the actual handle. i've no idea how you're meant to be able to keep all the bits in the right place and push the bolt accross the arm thing and mechanism. i don't really want to replace the whole thing as wouldn't that require another key (1 for door + 1 for ignition + boot)?

what kind of wiring is required? are the circuits and gubbins contained within the motors or do you have to wire the motors up to the locks and run cable around everything?

if the car never had central locking you will probably have to start from scratch

is starting from scratch going to a pointless excersize? i'm a novice at cars but wiring is easy enough. it would be nice to have them but if it's going to be a 2 days job gutting out every part of the doors and front of car i'll stick with the regular ones.

i would have thought the doors already have the mounting holes. its simply a case of looping the motors onto the lock rods (making sure the drivers door one goes in the drivers door) then wiring them together. the boot isnt operable from the central locking, and no-one knows an easy way to do it.

does the driver side mechanism do all the controlling and its mostly a case of wireing up a couple of terminals and connecting the lock rod to the master lock. if so where do the wires between the car and the door run through because i couldn't see an obvious route?

yes. the wires run thru the doors to the a pillars, then behind the dash.

the lock turns the alarm on and off - a common system on cars fo the era.

Has anyone been through the process of installing central locks yet? I'm in the middle of it, but I'm having great troubles getting the wiring through the doors. Any tips/hints/thoughts on this issue?

you have to somehow get them thru the 'tube', maybe taking the door off will make it easier? apparently its even more difficult to do electric windows

To feed wires through the doors, feed a fairly strong bit of wire through the 'tubes' first, then securely tape the wires to be installed on to the stronger wire, then simply pull them through.
