Spare tire location
Spare tire location
Why all 340 models have spare tire in the engine bay and all 360 haves it in the trunk?
Also,is it possible to pull out the 2.0 engine from 360 chasis and to put in a 1.4 engine along with transmission & differential from 340 without problems?
I ask this because i heard that if you put 1.4 engine along with gearbox, differential & alu prop shaft from it,prop shaft will not last a month because of the bottom rear shape of 360 chasis which have built in space for a spare tire.
Is this true or conversion like this would be trouble free?

Re: Spare tire location
why would you want such a conversion?
spare tyre is in the engine bay is simply because there was no room for it left in the engine bay like 340's have.
originally the tyre was moved to the engine bay because on the 343's you had the CVT filling up all the space in front of the rear axle and the fuel tank + exhaust muffler behind it; there was no room for it under the car
on a 360 the CVT wasn't available so they could play with the location of the fuel tank creating the saddle tank around the gearbox, making room for the spare tyre behind the rear axle in the boot floor.
the story isn't true as the space for the tyre is behind the rear axle and the gearbox is in front of it. it is true that the 340's drivetrain asks for a critical alignment; but that can be sorted with good engine mounts and adjusting the rear engine mount height
chassis beams etc match, the engine is bolt in and for the gearbox you want to get a template made of a 340's underneath for the 4 rubber mounts; you need to drill 4 big holes and 8 small ones and weld nuts on the inside of the chassisbeams to recreate the 340's chassisbeam

Re: Spare tire location
I don't,but i bought the car with this conversion.volvodspec wrote:...why would you want such a conversion?
I believe that original 340 chasis was bad & rusted out,so the previous owner just bought 360 for parts and installed 1.4 engine in it.
It's 360 GLS chasis with 1.4 engine installed in it & 5 speed manual transmission, which i believe is original from 340.
So i have 360 GLS chasis with 1.4 engine in it and the propshaft from another make of the car which was cut & welded to match with that setup.I want to buy a replacement prop shaft in order to avoid these vibrations which i have because of a welded prop shaft, but i was told that it won't last over a month because of the rear setup of 360 chasis.
When i bought the car,i also got a bad alu propshaft which originally was in 340 chasis, but it was useless.
If you ask me,i would never pull out 2.0 engine in order to put in 1.4.But,i bought it that way and now i need to solve this problem.

Re: Spare tire location
The 360 I've just dismantled has the 4 bigs holes etc. for the 1.4 gearbox set up, just covered with metal plates and plastic discs so the shell must be fine for 1.4 set up. Sounds like your only problem is the bad prop shaft.

Re: Spare tire location
No simple solution for using B200 with 1.4 drive though. 360 drive is easier to mount in a 340 though (I think), just 4 simple bolts and 360 crossmember above the diff. Even if you have to add the bolt threads+strengtheners the Torque tube keeps your alignment perfect.

Re: Spare tire location
Thanks guys.
From all i have read about this on this forum,it seems that i ONLY need a good 1.4 propshapt, along with good transmission & engine mounts.
If i figured out well,if i put a good propshaft in the car and mounts are bad it will not last long.
I guess that all mounts are ok,but i'll need to check that before i install original propshaft.
Just one more question....I've heard that propshafts for 1.4 & 1.7 are the same. Are they?
Thanks again.

Re: Spare tire location
Both statements correct, without good mounts a prop will break quickly. Yes, 1.4 and 1.7 props are the same!misha wrote:Thanks guys.

Re: Spare tire location
I'll clarify this: a 1.4 manual prop is the same as a 1.7 prop.Chris_C wrote:Yes, 1.4 and 1.7 props are the same!
Re: Spare tire location
And I also get this bit confused... 4 spd prop different to 5spd? Or the same?

Re: Spare tire location
There's only 2 props, manual and CVT. The 4 spd has a longer diff casing to make up for the lost space
Re: Spare tire location
Hi all.
When i done the gear box conversion on the mk1,the origional prop shaft
went back on the car. That means 4 speed props are the same as 5 speed ones.
Cheers Mark.
