That would be interesting to say the least...
The most powerful Volvo made themselves was the 360Racing with B19ET engine and 155
horses.
A bit of warning: how do you think you can strengthen the axle between engine and gearbox?
It's not going to stand this kind of power for long.

The 360Racing is really powerful. This engine is on the 740 turbo and even on a 740 it makes
fury.

No it's not. The engine of the 360Racing is specific to the
Italian market and was used only in the 240 Turbo over there. The 740 Turbo has a B200ET,
or a B23ET, and more horses, or a B230FT or something.

Hi again..
The transaxle and gearbox will hold for much more power than I will have......we have tried in a
another 300 project (330 hp turbo)
http://www.o2sense.com/o2car/res1.htm
Note..the gearbox in 360 is the same as in 740 turbo..

Over here in Holland, when the cars were new, one dealer
tried to shoehorn a B28E engine in one (156 hp) and al it did was shatter driveshafts. The
gearbox itself will handle the power, though. Just not the shaft in between.

No, 740 has b230et=183 hp and b230ft 87-89= 155hp and 90-98(940)=165hp. volvo 760 83-84 has b23et= 177hp

That was because they did not have a strong enough drivetrain to fit in a 360... the V6 wrecked driveshafts like matches...
Even standard 360's can rip off the splines on the piece between the gearbox and the axle...

there was a 740 16v turbo (2litre) for the italian market which i *believe* pushed just over 200bhp (201 or something).

if you read correctly , that car has an alfa romeo transaxle .
basically , any m47 is stretched with over 250 hp , and youre lucky if the splines havent ground off .
anyway im curious why you only have 220 hp ? whta cam you using ? Big valves ?

Well he probably put it in 340 which has that aluminum propshaft which doesn't always even handle the stock B14/B172 power..

There's no way he would have broken the trans-axle tube in 360 with just 156hp as there are few +200hp 360s in here and weak point is the diff. Of course the connection between the trans-axle tube and gearbox might get broken if the hex bolts are loose etc... parts are not in good shape. But when everything is in order the transaxle tube is not a problem. Makkiver's late white 360 Turbo had over 200hp and he had no problems with the trans axle tube. Diff's and gearboxes he had to change few times though.

Same thing with these two other 360 turbos which I know to have over 200hp. Broken diffs and gearboxes when going over 200hp but no problems with the trans axle tube if parts are in good shape. I've had no problems with any part in drivetrain but then again I don't have over 200hp.

Let's see when I'll get the intercooler maybe I'll start breaking parts too..

Cranks are available reliably from boat breakers. I know Dave (DBS Motorsport / volvorsport) has one for sale at the moment for a mid 80s B230.
Rods are standard B200/B230 items, but SPM sell H profile forged ones (ie: uber strong).
You need shorter pistons to correct the deck height (given the extra stroke), and again SPM sell forged examples.
cheers
