Little help getting my gearbox out

Post by Speedy88 »

OH HI. Yeah, I finally disconnected the torque tube, had to get some extra tools for that.

So now the torque tube is unbolted from the box, the seal is broken and I imagined that it would just slide out with persuasion. I have the box jacked up and I both tried to wiggle the box free with the tube unsupported and also with it supported on a stand.

But I'm not seeing any progress, the box can spin free of the tube but it hasn't moved back even a few mm.

I then undid the bolts that connect the "end bit" of the gearbox to the rest of the box and I've now managed to slide about 3mm back. But I can't get it any more than that, I've even tried risking damaging the alloy and using lever bars and screwdrivers.

This is with 2 people heaving on the box, I even tried tying a rope around the back of the diff and pulling from the back of the car - this resulted in the whole train trying to come out of the spigot bearing at the front. So we bolted the front of the torque tube on again (on the bellhousing) and heaved again. But now it's totally solid! It won't budge.

I'm truly stumped as to why it won't move. Any advice people? I'm going down again tomorrow for another go.

Ohh dear, looks like I did a dumb dumb. Talking to FJ it turns out there's 2 hex bolts at the end of the torque tube you have to undo from the inside.

HUR DERP.

Make sure you take one of the hex bolts out from the splined clamp, loosening will not do it. I make the same mistake recently, pulled the drive shaft partially out of the bearings.

Ok cheers. I'm hopefully having a bash at this tomorrow but I think an issue is going to be that I think the torque tube shaft won't turn as this was the original problem. We'll find out tomorrow I guess! If this is the case I might have to destroy the torque tube to get it off.
