B14.4E Tuning

I've decided to stick with the 1.4 in my rally car. I'm a little concerned about putting in a 2.0 as I'm after reliability and it will take some punishment in my car! The 1400 also puts me in a class which I can be reasonably competitive in (rather than competing with 2.2 and 2.4 pintos).

The car is used for road rallying, so a lot of stop and starting. Acceleration is key!

I've been throwing some ideas around, but I wondered what you guys thought:
  • I've already got hold of an earlier Renix unit with the extra advance. I run the car on super unleaded so this should give it a bit extra.
  • I wondered about using a different carburettor. Something like a Weber 38 DGMS. Get a custom manifold made for it. I was thinking the advantage would be the simultaneous opening of the chokes should give it more power when I need it. I think my 32 DIR has a flat spot, and I can really feel this under acceleration.
  • Bigger bore exhaust? I already have the middle box removed on mine (for clearance reasons). Having something like a 2" exhaust may be of benefit? With a single back box? Or will backpressure be a problem?
  • Other more extreme things. Like custom ignition management (MegaJolt) and port polishing, crank grinding that kind of thing.
Any tips, advice (even if it is:"Don't be stupid.") or warnings?

Thanks

Matt

If your doing that, and funds allow, i think you should go balls out! Bigger bores, shorter stroke, twin 40's, high compressions and high lift cam. Would be a savage screamer! Ah bugger, you need acceleration... Best get a turbo then :P Or does that move you up a class? Thomas...................

Unfortunately, I'm only allowed two chokes maximum, so twin 40's is a no go. A single 40 maybe though. Would I get any improvement fuelling it more though?

Turbo is out too, sorry. Not allowed any form of turbo or supercharger.

Seems like I rained on your parade a bit their Thomas, sorry! Funds aren't massive currently. Enough for a new manifold or carb, but maybe not a crank regrind or the like!

You need to establish if any R5 heads are compatible with bigger valves to aid breathing.

Do R5 have any cams with bigger duration??

Custom 4 branch and chimney will be money well spent.

Why do keep mentioning crank grind??
Has it ran the bearings or summit?

Otherwise you must mean tuftriding the crank but unless you fit steel rods pretty pointless.

Are you able to blueprint?balance the motor? Along with port and polish will be beneficial.

What is your budget and can you hold a spanner??

More oomph means empty wallet.

Fit a Gordini motor

Ah ok, skim the head, DIY porting and polish, play with the timing/ignition, a bigger twin choke, homemade 4-2-1 tubular fanny mould and a go faster sticker :) Of course a complete strip and rebuild will help too :) How about that? Thomas...............

Thanks sven, I'll investigate the R5, see if there is anything of use down that avenue (Haynes manual bought!)

As you both say, custom exhaust manifold would be a huge help. Just finding somewhere to fabricate me one!

Filter wise, do the K&Ns actually do anything? Surely they'll be taking in air from a hot engine. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Blueprinting would be nice. Port and polish seems to be the way to go too.

Sadly, it seems the way! Yes, I can hold a spanner. I would probably drop it mind you.

Thanks for the help guys. A lot to think about!
