a B14?! Granted I might find it underpowered now, but I've just put on my waterproofs, walked outside, organised my tools in the back of the Corset, found the B14 in the shrubbery outside and taken the head off. Head into Corset, tools away, indoors, waterproofs off.
30minutes. From overalls on to overalls off. I'd forgotten how nice and easy they are to play with.

Because it'll only do 30mpg whilst being incredibly slow at the same time? Still kinda would run one myself too, though...

200-300kg weight reduction and B14 would be plenty.
That is what I love in 343, it is simple and easy to work with, even vario pulley gap adjustment etc. is really easy to work with, there is space everywhere for tools, no hands hurting etc.
Lack of timing belt is really a bless too, valve adjustment is also really easy and especially cheap thing to do compared to B200 and their disc setup,
Compared to french crap 343 is like made to be serviced, it is so much more enjoyable to work with that higher running costs can be justified.
However I think that GM single point injection might make wonders for fuel economy, and that might be some interesting project for Chris to pioneer, something that is lowest in costs possible and easiest to install to maintain car's general way, that might improve fuel economy to level where thing would be a must to have.
But with Vario I'm still bit lost, why on earth someone would glue anything together, that does not make sense, screws and threads are so much better, I would like to redesign that EMV for many reasons but nostly because I have not sucseeded gluing it together properly

often wondered why there are no injection swaps done on the b14, didn't they make an injection version for a renault?

How about converting to either a single or twin SU? SU's from my experiance give better MPG then webber carbs.

I don't think carbs are good upgrade if trying to get more MPG, also those are so sensitive to about everything that it often results replacing tiny bits with difficult access, which with good injection system would be done by press of a button or two.
Carbs are fine if you like them as a hobby, but they are challenging to set straight when misbehaving and old carbs are mostly misbehaving.
Most economical AFAIK is single point injection, also very easy to setup too to replace carb.

A very valid point. They aren't real-world slow if you can afford to pour the fuel down the carb

I've just done a 2 hour trip from rochester into london and back in my 1400. About 90mph all the way there and back, humming away nicely, bobbing up and down

it was a laugh, but also the engine didnt feel like it was struggling, just buzzing along having fun

Shame its got no guts when i want to give it some, but its a nice engine as it is
