Went out to my 89 340 1.4 today, she's been stood about 4-5 weeks, running and starting fine before i parked her up, but today alas she would not start despite numerous attemps. it turns over but couldnt get her to fire up, that is until i poured a little petrol into the carb, then it ran ok. Any ideas, i'm pretty new to these cars. cheers Neil

Leave it parked for more than a week and the float chamber will be dry as bone.
If it's struggling to refill this pot then perhaps the fuel pump could be a bit on the weak side and be sooking back a bit and not overcoming the air in the line.
Just use every other day and it won't happen.

Trick here is to use petrol from accelerator pump, it often does not dry I have found and few fast kicks to accelerator before turning key might get just enough petrol to intake that car starts for short time, but during that short time fuel pump gets fuel and next startup will be enough to get car running.
Of course on other hand, it is perhaps better that car is not starting right away when stood a while, so that oil gets into valvetrain during starting attemps.
