Hi all
You may remember i joined on here around Christmas time when i had a 340 DL and was looking at road rallying it. Well i did one event and sold that one and got a 205 TD as i was commuting a lot. Well now i'm not, so i've gone and brought a 360GLT and i love it!
Again, i'm hoping to road rally it, but i want to uprate the brakes before that as the lack of vented discs on the front worry me. Will vented discs from another Volvo (perhaps a 240) fit on without much hassle? I've also heard something about Audi 80 brakes being similar, anyone know anything about that?
Dont want to go changing wheels as insurance co dont like that! I'm not a fan of drilled discs. What i really want is some vented ones, just gotta work out the cheapest way to do it. I know know 200/700 brakes wont fit as they're 5 stud. But after reading some old posts on here and a few other places it seems 400 brakes are fairly similar and may fit (although i cant actually find anyone who's done it). A visit to the scrappie may be in order soon to do some reconaissance!

Oh ye of little faith. my insurance company (Tesco) dont mind uprated brakes (as long as you dont fiddle with the ABS, which i havent got anyway). But a set of wheels will add lots to the premium. They stung me for £100 last year for a set of alloys that were worth about £50
im putting origional volvo alloys on mine (which you cant get in a well vented way).. and claim they were there since new - my cars a special edition anyways, so now that special edition meant it had alloys and bodycoloured bumpers

ps where you live-im a member of tynemouth&district motor club(anecc) and also do road rallys !!
Will try and get some M1144s, but prevention is better than cure and all that malarky. And if i have better brakes i'll feel more confident about driving faster
I'm down south, a member of Wessex Motor Club (ACSMC)
And yes 5lab, Tesco are very good with 340/360s!!! I go up in power and performance and insurance goes down
Fitting alloys are the best mod for the 'hassle'. The 'fan' spokes on mine suck/blow air over the discs...and they fade WAY less than before. Fit originals and it ought to be *cheap*. My insurance has gone up by £15 to fit the rims in my avatar (from a 440).
Solid discs are not bad per-se...getting air to the discs is a lot more important. If your fluid is good you've gotta try pretty hard to make them fade - I've never managed it with good fluid.
The 440 vented discs *should* be fine, but I've not found any on a scrapper yet to try it, but I'm planning to. They won't fit in the stock caliper / pad setup because they're a load thicker...maybe thinner pads would help...but I'd bet you'll need different calipers. I think 440 vented discs and 240 4-pots would be a nice all-Volvo set-up. The 240 4-pots are pretty much the most powerful calipers they've ever made. 940 ones are good, but 740 ones are fairly lame.
Well i've managed to fade 205 TD brakes with good, well adjusted brakes and dot 5.1 fluid
For now it'll just be a fluid change to dot 5.1 and i may rig up some sort of ducting for the discs to get more air in. For the price of a set of alloys (and maybe tyres) plus the £100 insurance hike its just not worth it. PLus i like the original alloys on there, even though they probably let next to no air thru!
Would the standard master cylinder cope with the 4-pots? My master cylinder is fairly new, so is in good nick. If so, then i think 440 discs and 240 4 pots will be a good upgrade! I will keep my eyes peeled for broken 400s/200s!
