Engine prices

Right, I've been looking into B230 engines for a wee upgrade. Dai very kindly offered me a 940 for not much money, but due to space restraints I cant take the whole car :(

So I'm looking for an engine by itself. Volvo Spares UK Ltd is just down the road for me and can do me a 740 B230 engine for £190. The engine has done 89k miles and comes with inlet manifold and injectors, possibly other bits if I need them. Is this a good price? Bear in mind they're about 2 miles from me, so if I find another engine its likely its gonna cost me £40 ish in petrol to get it or P&P to get it to me!

The other quote I've had is about the same from a place in Derbyshire, so it looks like its about right, but what do you guys reckon?

They'll also give me some 480 Turbo vented brake calipers for £28 each, which is a bit pricey but since I'm having huge trouble finding them elsewhere its quite tempting! And then just pray I can get them to fit :)

Any advice/info appreciated..

Cheers

I've heard Adam found they don't fit, so speak to him before handing over your hard-earned...

£190 sounds steep to me for a standard B230. I can almost certainly get you one for sub £100, but it'll cost you a trip to Derby.

personally, i'd buy a clapped out (but low milage) car of your choice on ebay for about £50, take the engine and other bits out then call your local scrappy up..

You need to fit the iinermediate cam from a 200 or 300 and move the dizzy from the back of the head to the 300 position.

Or you can also mod the heater box but moving the dizzy is the cleaner way. :P

I think the RHD heater box clears it just fine, so just run with the 7/900 head-mount dizzy. Of course I think the 200/360 block-mount is superior, but I would... :D

Ideally buying a car and taking the gubbins off I need would be the best way, but I live in a flat with communal parking. Since I've managed to blag a garage for free and already have 3 cars I think I may be taking liberties if I use another space up with a half stripped car!

The problem is that a trip to Derby is about a 350 miles round trip, so that's about £50 of fuel and a day wasted. And then money to get the scrappy to remove the car, so it'll probably work out around the same.

Maybe I'll just keep an eye out for something local in the coming months and go from there. I should really get the rest of the car sorted before swapping engines anyway.

Hi Carl, there is a B230E in my local breakers, its from a red 240 GLT estate.

Il be going up there soon after new year so I can have a further look at condition and mileage, price etc, the 240 itself hasnt been in a smash, ive seen it just sitting there.

Regards,

Al

Do bear in mind that a B200E (240/740) or B230E will be mechanical fuel injection, and has an inlet manifold which looks nothing like that of a B200E (360).

Yeah, expect a post soon asking what I actually need to do to make it all fit!

I'm hoping to run it on the standard 360 injection, but whether that is possible or not I'm not sure

You can run it on all the 360 hardware, but I'd set about finding LH2.4 from a B230F to control it (at least at first).

What car would that come from? I'm not too hot on these engine numbers!

Would that be a 940 by any chance?

Correct, an early 940 (or maybe a very late 740). You're learning :)

These are Lambda-sond models, no? If so they usually have a different badge offset on the front grille I think?
