Megasquirt working!!!

OK so everything's wired in and working. I haven't got a really good map done yet, but the car's pretty driveable, certainly the cruise setting are pretty good now, but the other bits are a bit rough round the edges.
Here's a map of us cruising down the M40.
The wideband makes it dead easy to tune up, provided you can stay in the same VE band for long enough

Have you Tried Vex Me to crunch your datalogs and spit out a fuel map.
Apparantley it makes tuning for fuel a piece of cake, and seeing as your N/A very easy as you dont have to keep retuning as you up the boost levels. Takes a few good datalogs for it to iron things out.
Are you running Spark as well??
Link to the Vex Me Thread on Turbobricks for you.

Yes VexMe sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure I like their target AFR tables. I'm also not sure its compatible with the LC-1 as the voltages are a bit different to the other Innovate products. I'm running MSnS extra, but using fuel only, so its got its own target AFR table in built so I kinda made my own target AFR tables up. The difficult thing is holding in a certain VE bin so you can get it sorted, otherwise tuning is pretty easy. Luckily it seems as though its rich any place where I haven't mapped, which is better than too lean.

Very interesting
What I want to know is about mappable ignition only systems that do not use wasted spark.
Wasted spark and LPG mixer sytems do not go together.

MS doesnt use wasted spark all the time !!!

Don't you go rolling your eyes on this forum Mr Slater
Great work Andy - can't wait to see it in action
cheers

hey guys!
Ive heard of megasquirt before but have a few questions...
For using it as an ignition only replacement do you need to obtain ( from volvo for example) the actual ignition map used originally on the car?
I know the 1.4 arnet a problem but didnt someone here ( forgot his name...

with the 340 1.7 turbo from a 440 ) say that the 1.7 engine runs a very retarded ignition map?
look forward to hearing from you guys

MS can run fuel, spark, or both. Andy is using fuel only at present. You'll have to start from scratch with the maps, programming your own - but that's the beauty - you're not restrained by Volvo's ultra-safe maps.

Excuse the completely retarded post I'm about to write....
So with the fuel only version the MS box of tricks is wired into what exactly? Renix for engine speed (or is that done away with), air flow meter, lamda sensor if fitted, what else?
The spark is then controlled by the dizzy running off the cam as normal?
How difficult is the fueling to set up once its all wired in?

I can vouch for that engine... It goes

Specially when Andy lets me play on my favourite country lane! There was a small (in jest

) comment about his tyres at one point though
Now I've seen megasquirt running, think I'll do a bit more reading up, and stick it on my 1.7T when I get round to it.

Here is some details from my Megasquirt and Spark Install.
Its currently off the car as i need to finish building my WideBand kit so i can tune effectively plus i need to make the harness more presentable instead of the quick mornings work loom to see if it actually worked.
One thing to sort was a Throttle position switch. The stock one on my car is only a switch to activate the idle valve system. So i grabbed a Proper TPS from a volvo 850, cut the shaft down on a spare 740 throttle body and JB welded the TPS to the body.
For the spark side of things, i grabbed an old 240 Dizzy that came equipped with a hall efect sensor. I removed all the mechanical advance/retard crap and locked the top and bottom halves of the dizzy together. So that this would provide me with a Signal for the igniton module. This in turn was hooked up to a Bosch 139 Ignition Module scavanged from a saab.
I retained the standard dummy rotor and dizzy on the back of the head to distribute the sparks as the parts are relatively new.
Then basically it was just a case of hacking a loom together using a scrap loom i'd scavanged from a yard with all the volvo connectors and just extended the wires a reasonable length to then connect to the MS box
This is my wiring diagram for MS with the added spark side to it.
Which then relates to this lovely little mess under the bonnet and inside the car.
Apart from a few worrying mins when doing some final checks and trying to set up the block dizzy to get the base timing and discovering i had no spark, which i quickly noticed was due to forgetting to give the igntion module an earth, the car fired on the 1st turn of the key.
After that success i pulled the wiring of the car, swapped the throttle body back over and plugged back in the original wiring loom.
This left me with this harness pictured below which now i can turn into something presentable and factory looking under the bonnet. and without so much slack.

Well I needed someone with a slightly leaden right foot to check out my higher load bins so you did me a service

It deffo has more response than the LE-Jet having driven it round myself.
I discovered another feature, Autotune in Megatune, you don't need VexME at all now, you can use the target AFR bins you've programmed in to Megatune and once you've set the EGO and the correction factors in custom.ini, the car tunes itself as you drive
Chesh makesure when you get your wideband that all the voltages correspond exactly to the AFR, cos on my LC1 I had to change all the formulae in the megatune coding. Even though it had an LC-1 option, whoever designed the code didn't get their maths right.

I'm sure the 400 series one just screws on.
