Carb clean tips?

Post by petavius »

I am going to use some carb clean on Sunday under the advice of a mate. Never used it before and although the instructions are on the can, does anybody know of any further tips? :340:

spray it on the outside of the carb, then hold the trottle cable in (to get some revs) and spray it into both sides of the carb.. the engine will try and choke (cant ignite properly, but give it a tug on the throttle and it should clear. also great at getting crap off hands :)

If you are going to spray it in while the engine is running stand to the side you could get a very nice pop back.

I suggest also giving it the water torture at the same time...make it drink half a pint of water a LITTLE at a time using a vacuum hose - that going to the distributor or Renix unit is just perfect. Give it plenty of revs (hold it at 3k), and have a glamourous assistant to hand to keep it there - it won't necessarily be that easy!

cheers

Well we did the carb clean and all went well. We also altered the idle a bit as it seemed a little slow. Its still running a little erratically but Im guessing there is some gunk sloshing about in there and hopefully it will clear!

It was kind of threatening to cut out on me at low revs - something I've experienced before with the carb, it seems to be better on that score now we've carb cleaned it but as it ticks over it still seems a little irregular. Im sure it should generally run smoother than it does.

It sounds as if the idle/fuel shut off solenoid is faulty. This is a prob (yes, another one!) we encountered on Nessy and it was cured by the fitment of a new solenoid

Is there any way to check the visually fine HT Leads? Can they be the reason foor my 14.4 running nice but still consuming too much fuel?
