340 Bigger engine

Post by Andrzej »

Hello all

I have a wonderous 340 glt 1.4 auto
very pleased with is as a freebie scrappy saver with heated seats electric windows etc.

I was looking at the ammount of space in the engine bay and was wondering if anyone has performed a slightly larger engine swap say ford essex v6 or rover v8 for more vrooommmmm!

if you have would like to know how difficult it was or what peoples thoughts are on the transplant

cheers

Andy

buy a cheap v8 carb engine, drop it in, have the prop made up , (reasonably cheap) and try to destroy it!!! If it goes bang what the hell it only cost a couple of quid!!

I'm guessing that wanting a v6/v8 you're not going for outright power... you want noise too?

Otherwise there are far better and more efficient ways to making a 300 a bit of a beast!

I notice it's the CVT transmission you have, which probably won't take a huge amount of power. So you'd probably be better off finding a manual 1.4 or 1,7 and as Stuntman says, get a prop made up, or use the 360 which had a torque tube, which is significantly stronger.

There weren't any 340 GLT's from the factory, however Adam aka 340GLT has created such a beast. Someone may have played with the badges on your car previously however!

Welcome and enjoy V3M.

Anything can be fitted with a bit of work!

Rover v8s are reasonably compact so should fit in a 300 engine bay without too much trouble. Of course, there'd be plenty of work to do considering there are other bolt in upgrades available!

And I'm not sure how the drivetrain would appreciate the torque, especially being the rubber band version!

Word of advice: leave the Ford v6 well alone!

+1 for the belt-drive not taking any more power. If you want to go V8 (and I'm certainly in favour), you'll need a 360 drivetrain (you could use a 340 setup with a stronger prop, but it's more expensive, and you'll need an adaptor plate made up for either), or stronger still. Standard Rover V8s are pretty weedy, so the 360 setup ought to do the job.

cheers

Depends what version of the v8 you get. Some of the ones in old landies were designed to run on wee, so in out right power terms are pretty shameful. However the later EFI ones are much better - over 200bhp and almost 300lb ft - probably enough to at least start snapping half shafts, especially if you're doing quick take offs!

But hey, it'd be fun whilst it lasted :)

Weren't the most powerful ones in the SD1 at about 180bhp? Obviously loads of torque, but Dokeh gave one a damn good run for its money at Santa Pod, and it had headers and a big carb. Obviously amazing things can be done, but stock, they're poop for what they are (in a performance sense). Much like a Volvo redblock . IMO, of course :)

SD1s, in their newest form, are about 20 years old though with a mere 3.5 litres. Think Range Rovers. Think 4.6 litres!!

The good thing about the RV8 is that's its fairly light for what it is, so when put in something like a 360 it wont upset the handling. Would love to see someone do it!

Unfortunately that 260 V8 went for more than my wallet could stretch too :(

The car cost you fresh air, spend at most £150 on a V8 and Tranny from any car, with all the ancillaries, forget the speddo and the other stuff, get a prop made £100-300 and destroy the car on a track day, just have fun with it if thats what you want, if parts fail of snap or preferably blow up, never mind, you'll still get some mopney weighing it in at the metal merchants, and yes foggy the SD1 had one if not the most powerfull V8 available for the english market for the time.

Have fun!!

Not saying much though, is it? :( We suck at V8s. I want three magic words to enter this discussion at once...."Small" (or "Big" ;)), "Block" and "Chevy"

Small Block Chevy with eidelbrock tuning gear and twin turbos with progressive Nos and water injection with automatic fuel adjustment.

There you go James any better?

Can you shove a 360 drive train with a 1.4 final drive in? Super quick launch, and strength to boot. Small block chevy in there would be tight, anyone know how the 300 with the Jag V12 goes? I'm doubting it's slow...

Duuuuude.....uh huh.......sweeeeeeett.....

GLTs have the same final drive as one of the 340s, but I think it's the 4 speed. It's us carb people who have it really rough on the diff front.
