Porsche 928 Transaxle

There was some talk in 300power.com about fitting a transaxle system from Porsche 928. It looks like it would fit with some work.

928 GTS packs 340hp/500Nm stock and what I have heard there has been no problems with turbocharged ones either.

So who is going to be the first one with Porsche transaxle?

Only minus seems to be the price, those are not so cheap as ones from 300-series.

There are also automatic versions.

i wonder if you could ditch the bell housing, torq tube and selector rod and just use the box and final drive......? do these have lsd's as standard and better final drive and g'box ratios than the stock 300 ones....?
interesting....

sponsive .
a renault UN1 gearbox with a bit of invention wouls bea an easier conversion , IMHO .
nothing of this sort would ever be easy .
the porsche transaxle was used in the RS1700T escort of the early 80s , so this sort of mod could be done .
the problem is , you try finding one for £50

If I were to go BIG power I think I would look at other ways- more or less box up-front and conventional rear axle.

I think the transaxle is key to the character of the 300 series. If I make a big power car, it'll still have a transaxle for sure.
How much power can the Renault ones take Dave? How do you propose to get drive to the rear of the car?
I didn't realise until last night when watching a Jeremy Clarkson DVD at Rupert's place that it was the 928 with the V8 which had the transaxle. I'd always thought it was one of the girly 4-pot Porsches, so dismissed it.
This is definitely an interesting development. For me (so far) it's either 928 or Corvette C5.

Well, if it's a V8, you may as well put it in at the same time, and replace the whole drivetrain

UN1 box will take the power youll be pushing herr foggmeister , i think also they can be ugraded quite easily , with a new input shaft .
but then youll be getting rid of the bellhousing anyway , making the shaft shorter

I know that's your plan, but if you find a Porsche with a grearbox and drive shaft as well, a bolt on V8 sounds tempting, just think of the sound

V8 sounds nice.. but so does a highly boosted t5 engine imo

Is the T5 simply a tuned version of the regular 2.5 in 850's? If so, they arn't bad sounding engines, but nothing beats V8

T5s are a 2.3, but yeah....same engine.
If I'm going to the trouble of putting a different box in, I'll be wanting it to hold 600+ lbft. Most likely is that neither will happen, but I'll not be upgrading without the uber-engine...if that makes sense...
cheers
