Temp and fuel gauge not working....

Post by Gavin J »

Hi,

I bought a 1986 Volvo 340 today as a cheap runabout whilst my other car is off the road.

The only probelm i have got is that the fuel and temperature gauge does not work - what is this likely to be? i'm hoping it will be just a fuse but i've not checked them yet.

Cheers
Gav

Sounds like an earth to me, do the indicator lights in the dash panel light up too? I think they are on the same earth for the panel. Reach up by the steering column (the cowling around the column comes out if you pull the four studs out, middles first and choke knob off) and fiddle with the two big plugs going into the speddo panel.

Just an update, i've used the car today for work and it appears that the following don't work on the instrument cluster,

Temp Gauge, Fuel Gauge, Handbrake light, Seat Belt Light and maybe a few others....

The indicators, headlights, heated rear window all light up on the instrument cluster...

Any ideas?

Any ideas what sort of fuel consumption i should get out of it to a tank full? its a 1.4 and i don't want to run out of petrol!!

Thats got to be either an earth fault or a fuse, check fuse 9, and see if you have windscreen washer pumps. I'd say it's the fuse, basically covers everything youve said +the washers. Actually.. also does the rev gauge too, does that still work?

The washers work - mine does not have a rev counter fitted.

Will have a look at the weekend, cheers for the replies so far!

Its the positive connection to the cluster, Its the end pin, 12 on the LHS connector. Best bet is to give them a wiggle, if that fixes it then take the dash out and carefully clean them up with a solvent cleaner, together with a bit of judicious bending of that particular pin. As Chris says, its fused on number 9 and is a black and red colour.

Hope that helps.
