GLS vs. GLT

Post by ebdl »

I currently have the option of a 360 GLS or GLT. Both 1984, both 5dr. I think both are in pretty good nick - I don't know as much about the GLT but from how it's been described it seems like it should be ok.

Does the extra 23hp and 10Nm/rps in the B19E make a noticeable difference in the performance and is the jetronic ignition likely to be more or less reliable than the carb on the B19A? Are there any other differences in brakes/suspension or is it pretty much a matter of trim and alloys?

[edit] The GLT is now looking to be £170 more to insure and that's fully comp when my GLS quote was TPFT (£310 vs. £140). I can get the GLT down to £260 TPFT.

Depends on colour ;)

I've heard the early GLT's are pretty damn quick being high compression, but the GLS is hardly slow. It's not really an extra 23bhp though is it?! I think the gap is far closer than that.

I'd go for the GLS with the GLT alloys ;) Awkward bugger eh...

Agreed!

The GLS has plenty poke and same brakes. Some 14" alloys improves the handling quite alot.

According to my brochure for the 1983 300 series, max output is 92hp/5400rpm for the B19A and 115hp/6000rpm for the B19E. The GLS is the metallic maroon colour and the GLT is blue (I presume dark metallic, but was there a lighter shade?).

I'm hoping to get some track action with this car, which is why I think the GLT might be the better option if it really does have a power or handling advantage - or maybe it's easier to tune?

I had a newer engined gls (101bhp) but this B19 engined car seems alot more pokey. Must have a flatter torque curve.

The GLT does have different suspension - but I'm not convinced it's that significant. The injection isn't any easier to tune, because to tune it you need to junk the injection system anyway...

The light metallic blue is nice on a Mk2 GLT... but maroon metallic is my favourite colour on the GLS!

Light metallic blue here: (2nd row down)

I would choose GLT and then to install Megasquirt, would be much easier than for GLS :D Almost plug and play

The man has a point actually... I'd forgot about the fuel system differences

Oh yes, even if not going to install megasquirt, still injection is far more nicer to drive and start in cold than carb version.

Differential is shorter ration in GLT too, so it runs higher revs, maybe bit more thirsty, little things.

It depends on your intentions. Will you keep them stock? If so, get the GLT. If you're planning simple modifications (e.g. bolt on a set of big carbs), get the GLS. If you're planning extensive modifications (i.e. stuff that needs aftermarket EMS to support it), get the GLT.

cheers

Stock injection on a 360 is shocking in cold weather for first 30 seconds. Completely over rich which is why many many 360 injections suffer performance-wise. They get coked up by their injections throwing gallons of fuel into them.

If the GLT's any good I reckon I'll go for that because I'm unlikely to do much modification to the power-train. I'm most likely to sort out the suspension and brakes (if necessary?) and get some decent tyres.

Of course I could get both... [note to self: this is meant to be a cost-effective money-saving enterprise]

The GLT sold already  If only I wasn't so busy and everywhere wasn't so far away :x Oh well, I guess it's going to have to be the GLS then.

I am coveting that grey GLT that's reappeared on eBay but I don't think that's going to happen... we'll see.

Looks like you've got no choice but to go for the GLS and get a set of twin carbs then
