I've got a sheet of 7 mm ali in the shed, waiting to be bolted on. Theres a guy who did last years Lombard who has one, I've havn't seen it, but from what I've heard its the same shape as the oil drip tray, so I'm not sure how much use it'd be.

Although they are useful, remember that you are lowering the ground clerance dude, and also the distance between guard and sump is critical, touching and it wouldn't do much (apart from spread the load a bit) to far away, and you'll trap stones if you kick any up, and then put those through the sump if you hit anything.

if you made it of thick metal, but almost touching the sump itself, would it not spread the load to the mounting points

ours is this shape ___/ <-being the front lip . its made from tank armour plating  and has 4 legs[2each side] that bolt to the chassis legs. the rear has a flat plate on legs, bolted through floor to cover g'box/diff .
if i was going to make 1 i would use 3mm checker plate as its cheap and easy to work with. then make some brackets to bolt onto legs.
