Front calipers / discs

Post by Duvel78 »

The front calipers are the same on a 340 and a 360 model?? And the discs?

I see no info about that in the Haynes, only an advice to use different disc pads for the GLE and GLT (in the "revue technique automobile")

Afternoon Aymat,

Basically 340 and 360 brakes are identical on the front. 360 rear drums are a little larger though. There are differences between early (76-79) cars and late (post 80 cars).

Upto and inc.1979 The front calipers were of a twin piston fixed body design by Girling. From 1980 they were ATE single piston sliding body units. With the change of calipers the front discs changed, increasing in size from 233mm diameter (actually 232.7mm) to 239mm. Disc thickness also increased from 9.85mm to 12.85mm.

On 340s rear brakes are 203.2mm (8") drums with 36.5mm wide linings, and on 360s the drums are 228.6mm (9") with slighter wider linings at 40mm. Rear brakes have not changed over the years. 340 wheel cylinders
have a bore of 19.05mm whilst 360s got larget units with a bore of 20.64mm.

Upto ch.451743 (about 1980) The brake servo was an 8" Girling unit with a 19.05x34.5 (bore/stroke) master cylinder and after this ch.no. it was a 7.5" Bendix with a 20.64x36 m/cylinder. When introduced, the B19 was fitted with a 9" Bendix servo (with the same m/cylinder as before). From the 1986 model all variants were fitted with a 9" Isovac servo with, again, the same master cylinder.

In production there were slight differences in the master cylinders in that those fitted to manual cars had 3 pipe connection ports whereas CVT cars had 4. the forth being fitted with the high pressure brake switch. In later years only the CVT version was supplied as a spare part and on manual cars the unused port was sealed with a threaded plug.

Think that covers most of the brake specs - oh there were different pressure reducing valves (depending on ch.no.) up to 1980 but from then there only 2 version - one for CVT cars marked 25/5 and one for all manual cars (340 and 360) marked 30/3.

All the best - Mac.

Thanks Mac for this VERY detailled answer... always very professionnal sm40

I've really learned something now... I think it was a bad idea from Volvo to put the same front discs as for the 340...

The "vented discs" mod is still in my mind, is there something new about that, someone tried this? I remember a picture of Chris red GLT with vented discs...

according to fisa homologation papers the following discs can be used:
239x12.85[stnd?]
280x22
239x20
258x22
240x12

doesnt list part numbers or anything which is a pity :(
for each disc size it gives alot of tech info which i wont type or i'll be here for ages, but basically it looks like 3 different single pot sliding calipers were used. the size of the pistons are:
48mm /36mm /54mm
it also give specs for disc like :
external disc diameter/ internal disc diameter / braking surface area / length of pads[112,145,95,110,69mm]

wish i had a scanner

you could even get a dual master cylinder with adjustable compensating bar[i can just make out the part no. on photo - girling 625]
