OK, so what's this I read about the 340 DL 1.4 being the same unit as used in the Renault 5 Turbo? Has anyone done a conversion?

i don't think so. the origonal alpine engine has gone in, but as the latter 1.7 turbo or 1.8 16v engines drop straight in (and have more power), they are a preferred option

Blimey you only got the car this morning and are thinking of an engine swap already !!!!!

Yeah, they are the same block, but different head. It'd all work, but needs major replumbing, as it is the heater box gets in the way and the bonnet won't shut ;)

Just seeing what my options are.

I'll be running it as daily winter transport.

You either need to move the turbo, or remove the heater box, as the turbo is sat to the rear of the engine (when installed in a 340) in an R5GTT in order to clear the bulkhead. I'd move the turbo. Not an easy swap, but it can be done.

Has anyone ever done it before?

you will have problems with the brake servo.
i have looked in to this conversion and it is possible but you will have to make a custom exhaust manifold.

not in my eyes. in reality nothing is as close as people seem to make out. would only take a link pipe (from stock or GTT) to sort that tho.

next time ill take one of my spare GTT manifolds with me, ill do it tomorrow afternoon if i get back from picking the MR2 Turbo up in time, and make sure.

TBH i was 100% sure when i checked the other day, but the amount of people saying otherwise on here (tho i dunno how well these people have checked, if at all), has hit my confidence a tad...

i know there is, but i got a short memory, lol.

and this is why i hate internet forums a lot of the time, 90% of the info is just 3rd hand, or guessed, or flattly made up.

you was with me, you know what we did, and you know my comments on what will fit and how, just remind me next time i start to believe someone whos never actually tried again pls mate, lol

lol, yeah no worries, such a ferkin big engine bay you could virtually mount the turbo ANYWHERE!as for the heater box,god its not hard to rip out and modify in our own special way!

yeah, that took all of 2secs to see how you could have a perfectly good heater setup even without the std box.

personally, like said soon as i saw, id prefer to knock up a link pipe so i could put the turbo somewhere i prefer... ;)

I don't know of anyone who has actually fitted a GTT motor into the bay of a 300 in the UK to test fitment, but a couple of us have done measurements now, and if you want to retain the heater housing, it'll be very, very close (at best), and surely melt the damn thing within minutes. If you're prepared to ditch the heater box, it'll definitely fit. The earlier 300s had a smaller bay, which was enlarged in the early 80s to make fitment of the 2.0 lump easier....but which made the B14 look just stupid in that huge bay.

As far as I know the only guy who has actually fitted one is on the continent, and decided he needed custom manifold, although his heater box was angled the other way (i.e. more in the way) when compared to a RHD car.

I'd love to see it done, and there's no harm in trying the stock manifold...but I'd expect you to run into problems with this aspect of the swap.

cheers
