Hi and welcome, you'll find plenty of friendly advice and help here. There are plenty of topics dedicated to some of the more common problems or items that may require servicing, makes a good read! Good luck and don't let anyone put you off of the 340 though their lack of knowledge or lack of understanding of the cars!

Hi Linda , the easiest way to get proper torque settings is to tighten the nuts up until hand tight and then use a torque wrench , you just put the correct socket on the end for the nut you want to tighten, set the poundage and tighten it until you hear it click then you know its right . try to tighten the bolts up opposing each other so it tightens evenly ( a bit like you tighten up wheel nuts )

If this is a 1.4, be very careful undoing the water pump bolts, as if its the original pump they will almost certainly be seized in the head. Have some spare to hand to put back in after!! If you do break some usually they brake flush with the pump, but you could be unlucky and have them snap flush with the head!!
Good luck!

£27.00 + vat from euro car parts or £21.50 from german and swedish for a new one not really worth buying parts like this second hand as they will probably just as or more worn than your old one.

Welcome Linda!

Whether it's better to buy new or used parts...unless you happen to find mechanical 'ancillaries' (like alternators, starter motors, etc) in a scrap yard which are obviously nearly new, it's normally best to buy new. Following those examples, I bought an alternator from a scrap yard which couldn't have been on the engine for more than 6 months, but on the other hand I managed to pick up a brand new starter motor for £1 on ebay.

Some parts are worth buying used, but most mechanical parts are best bought new - if it's a car you intend to keep beyond next year's MOT (what we'd encourage where possible!), it's often actually better value to buy new.

cheers

James
