SAFETY ! Wheel nuts/studs

A few months ago I went to take off the pass back wheel to find the wheel nut complet with part of the stud floating behind the cap. Well I was very suprised as I always tighten wheel nut myself and never let a impact gun near them. (this axle is a replacement for the original as the bearings were shot if you remember)

Well like a wolly I just replaced the one stud knowing that I SHOULD get away with it. As some of you will know and I most definatly do you should always replace the stubs in comple hub sets.

On Sunday night we noticed a knocking noise. I got out to investigte but could not find anything wrong. We set off again, I looked in the mirror only to see the back pass wheel wobbling away. OH SH1T !

I got out pulled the cap off only to find TWO studs snapped off! I got my wheel brace out and nipped the remaining two nuts up and we carefully proceded home. Please note you should never drive with any wheel nuts missing.

So the lesson is ALWAYS replace studs in hub sets.

I will be rebuilding the original axle soon and fitting all new studs.

It's slow tonight!

I thought at least one person would say,

" Doctors orders - Check your NUTS"

Aye had this problem on my mates 360GLT about 6 years ago. Just replaced all the studs in one go.

I vaguely remember having a bit of a palarva in getting the new studs actually into the hub.

Pulling them tight into the hub was the easy part, a spacer and a wheel nut did that job, but i'm sure we struggled to get the studs into the hub without them fouling on the drum backplate.

Perhaps as you've done it recently you can remind me of the palarva we possibly had.

It is a little fidley in that you have to to either side not top or bottom but its not that bad. I see you also did it the wrong way and pulled the studs through rather press them in.

i've heard if you loose nuts you should take them off other wheels so you've got minimum 3 on each wheel..

Correct about using 3 nuts on each wheel as a temperary measure.

My problem was no studs to put them on.
