hello all, a bit odd i know lol but ive just been thinking recently of putting a 1.9 turbo diesel engine from a renault 19 into the little 1.7 340, main reason really is that i can seem to find quite a few around going for pennies, could anyone help me out on what bits and bobs will be required to get the job done?, any help would be brill'
ahhh i thought it was going to be relatively easy to fit in, will just have to fund a little more for a better engine, wasnt thinking of lpg as this engine has given me some grief in past
car seems to judder slightly when you nail the throttle on warm, not all the time though, theres a wee tappet noise which has started occuring in the last 2 weeks ever since i got fresh oil changed and put it through a mot just over a month ago, was thinking someone may have hidden the noise with thicker grade oil? and seems to be giving out a bit of white smoke on idle and when you rev it on the drive (warm engine) which im suspecting head gasket may be going?, cant really look in oil filler cap for white gunk right now as car had a little aquaplane incident on friday and kissed the curb so its sitting at my local garage right now while i grab some bits to get it fixed up
Yeah I can see the torque being the main problem as thats what kills drivetrains, if I was going diesel i'd try to cram the D5 engine into a 360, sounds pretty good too! I reckon the insurance would kill you too mate as soon as you change an engine
hi 340cbr, i was getting the impression that 1.6 diesel 340s were a bit of a rare find around the uk if im right?do you know if fitting the 1.9 turbo diesel engine is going to be more work compared to fitting a 1.7 turbo petrol engine?
Correct, the 1.6 was never available in the UK, only in certain places in Ireland I believe. It makes you laugh when on Ebay and your local motor parts stores they can supply you with everything for the 1.6 dieseel, but try to tell you a 2.0 GLT never existed because it's not listed in their books!
There is a chap from the Friends of the Volvo 300 in Scotland that has a diesel 300.

G reg 360 GLT, G reg 340 GL Variomatic, plus many more..........
Good point Mick. It's currently not running, we tried a couple of times to get it started. The glowplugs weren't working and compression seemed low. However the hard work on the conversion is done, and if you sourced another engine or got the current one going it would make for a good project.

How similar is the 1.9TD found in 400's to the B172? Would that have the correct bellhousing and sump layout for a 300 install?
