Try replacing a rubber on the rear silencer (one nearer to the drivers side) with a big zip tie. This should remove excessive movement. I've had similar trouble when the car sags under heavy load and driving on uneven surfaces.

Depends where its hitting. Mine strikes on the leaf spring in front of the rear wheel. Twisting it might work for your problem.

its hitting behind the wheel mount on the spring (dont know what to call it!)
but ill investigate further

Sounds like twisting the rear silencer might sort it.

Yeah, I think you're right. Carl called over the other day and one of the rubber exhaust donuts on the rear section was missing, causing it to hang low and hit the leaf spring hanger, but replacing the rubber as it was the n/s one made it worse and pulled it tight onto the hanger. We think because it was hanging for long enough with out it, it's twisted it round, so yeah, get a new clamp, as the old one will probably be rusty, and free it and twist it round so it hangs right.
Sounds like someone spent some money on the car before you and looked after it to get a stainless system, might be a VOC one. I've yet to carefully look at the one on one of my cars.

yea some one has spent a fair bit on it, its had been in his family since new, the daily runner to the shops basically, but ive had no problems with it except the feckin braided cloth fuel pipes near the carb.

Yeah those braided cloth covered fuel hoses are pants! I've replaced them on my 340 with fuel injection hosing. Why they weren't like that from new I'll never know if it's going to last longer!

All 300's are shocking with exhausts if you don't properly line them up! Twisting the back box usually cures it on 340's and 360's
