Wanted - Volvo 360GLT

Post by radiodanno »

Hi - First post here.

Now being the proud tenant of a lock up garage, I'd like to relive my youth and get hold of a Volvo 360GLT.

I had one as my first proper car in 2000 (aged 17) and my friends loved it as much as I did. Now 24, it seems the right time!

I sold mine (named Goldmember) to a friend - he still has it, but isn't too keen to let it go (git).

I'm not that handy at car maintenence, so something with a reasonably decent body would be grand. Not fussed about what year, would prefer three door to five (last one was a 5 you see) and a nice colour. PAS non essential.

Hi, and welcome to V3M! If you're not overly fussed on the timescale I'll have a 5 door, smoke silver GLT on an E plate for sale sometime fairly soon once I've MOT'd it.

They're addictive cars, glad to hear you'd like to own one again! Sounds like you've got some sensible mates too, as normally they can never understand why anyone wants to own an old Volvo!

Have you seen the GLEi in the For Sale section? Not quite a GLT, but pretty close.

If I had a few spare pounds I'd probably buy it myself!

Ah, you see- out of all my mates - I was the only one who had a car that would go sideways :D

Insurance was cheap- seats were warm - and there was a guy just down the road who ran his own garage after 10 years working at the volvo main dealer- full service for £115!

No immediate rush - in fact with christmas just gone, later would be better. But I don't want to jump ahead of anyone in the queue.

Any pics would be gratefully received.

Welcome! Revisiting your youth my arse - you're only 2 years older than me :)

3dr GLTs are a real rarity - I can only think of 2 mk3 3dr GLTs on this forum. Most 360 GLs seem to be 3dr, but are generally older cars (C and D plate, often). If you're really set on an injection model, a 5dr or a 4dr saloon will be easiest to find. It may be worth compromising on this point given...

...Rust is the biggest enemy. The odd mechanical thing will need attention or go wrong here and there (although as I'm sure you found out, these are very dependable cars, given their age), but rust is THE problem, and the thing you're likely to spend the money on in the long term. You can swap a complete drivetrain out in a weekend for about £200 in parts, but you'll spend thousands making a body solid and straight.

Given that we're mostly not members of the trade, there a network of people with repair skills is starting to emerge. Dai in North Wales does maintainance work, Pete's uncle (did I get that right?) is an experienced bodywork man who may well be willing to take on bodywork tasks, and I'm hoping to get more involved with that end of things once I have my MIG set up at our new place.

Pete's smoke silver car is lovely (resprayed 2 years ago?) and I'm worried that AMR will stick it into a hedge (right mate ;) hehe...). First Steve, now me being harsh? We're not ganging up on you, honest :-D

cheers

Yep, he's my Uncle and he's not called Bob! He's not a bodgit man, if he's going to do something, he'll do it properly and well. I did ask him if he'd be interested in doing such repairs, and if he's not got a big project on the go he'd probably do a lot of bits and pieces on 300's as fill in jobs. Especially as he's now done the chassis rails on one of mine, so knows the car a bit better and did the rear jacking point on another.

AMR actually mentioned this to me himself, all credit to him, he really wanted to find a ratty or less cared for car to start with. I've got to admit, it's not a car I really want to part with as it's had a lot of work done, and it's very nice! However, I have too many cars to consider keeping it. I've had the chassis rails repaired, properly, and done a few more jobs, will MOT it, so the outlay is more than the car is worth, so I want it to live and go to a good home!

If you sell a car though, once it's gone, it's no longer anything you have control over!

Here's a crazy idea...I believe IC has been contemplating getting your silver one Pete, and Mr IC is only just down the road from Mr AMR, so Mr AMR could potentially buy Iain's old one. Iain's isn't quite as tidy as the silver chap, so it wouldn't really matter if it picked up a few battle scars.

Joking aside...and I'm all for 'hard' use of the cars...but I'd like to try to 'steer' the prettier cars to 'road' users rather than those with an interest in motorsport, as that inevitably tends to involve some 'contact' :)

cheers

Cunning plan Baldrick!! Indeed, I agree, there are plenty of average cars about, but as the 300's are getting rarer in good condition, the better ones do need to be cared for, but, that's not to say they shouldn't be driven. Minimising the risk by not drifting the tidy ones and getting into motorsport works though!

Well if AMR doesn't take it - and it sounds like he will - please let me know.

Well I took my old 360GLT around Snetterton once (I was interviewing someone their about Caterham 7's and the chap let me take my car around to compare it to a ride in a 7!)

Enjoy the car.
