VDO one reading , Smiths another

Post by mickt »

My Smiths odometer measures 137 miles for a trip that measures 155 miles on my VDO odometer Impossible eh I hadn't noticed a big difference in speedo readings oh the joys of running two 360s never ends

Now that really is wierd! Is it possible the Smiths unit stopped for a while (as tired VDO ones can)? That really is a huge margin of 'error'.

cheers

Mick , this is probably a silly question but are the wheel and tyre combinatios correct for both cars because if they are not that could throw the odometer reading out

I am not expecting the unravel the mystery however--- the readings I am noting are from the trip meter , I am in process of calibrating trip vs total meter so far seem to tally tho'.almost exactly . One thing I did notice straightaway on the Smiths (BTW were they really made in Cricklewood in London where I remember Smiths had lots of factories ) was that the numerals move in a stepped fashion whereas the Swiss ones movement is gradual and continuous . Hence I have this vague theory there maybe say one of two teeth missing which may reduce the totals. Mick the speedo readings compared to say 30 mph tailgaters and 60 mph limited HGVs seem to be correct - the tyres are 175 on steel on both cars

Permission to mench another quaint development On having a puncture on the Mk2 I discovered the wheel nuts have a chrome trim on them which was rusted underneath on most of them could not be removed without destroying caps What should been a 19mm fit was in fact bigger as was swollen up

End of todays dairy

Cheers mickt
