Pete has PAS on his vario 1.4 which was fitted when the car was new. He's got the original receipts for what was used I believe.

Sounds likely that there is some problem making the steering heavy which might be a lot easier to fix than retrofitting PAS?

change the steering rack. should make a noticeable improvement.

heavy steering is usually a sign that the rack needs replacing.

Hello, just a thought... there might be cheaper ones on eBay which would be brand new (or at least refurbished). Seller gbw222 has one for £12 p/x plus delivery and cloverc243 has one for £25. Might be worth a search. Cheers, bogbasic.

Strut top mounts could have gone, this causes spring to act as bearing instead of top bearing. Quite common fault, if there is cracks in those triangle shaped strut top mounts then they need changing.

Hmm yeah, if the wheel is harder to turn that you've experienced before then there could be a problem with the steering geometry or wheel alignment.

First of all do the stupid things first though and make sure the tyres are in good condition and up to pressure. Then if you can, jack the front of the car up and place on stands so you can see if the wheel is stiff to turn when there's no load on the tyres.

If that's all OK then I'd get the car's wheel alignment checked at a professional fitters.

Pettaw may well be on the money - Nessy's steering got a lot lighter when it was tracked correctly.

I have to say, I love your powers of deduction here...
3 previous 340s...all fine...
....new one is heavy...MUST NEED PAS! :D sm56

Sorry, just tickled me. :) 340 1.4s are pretty light for manual steering cars. I'm pretty certain something's up with it. Having said that, if you do want PAS, I have a kit for a 340 for sale...just needs a 360 rack.

cheers

Having said that Foggy, my 1.4 is tons worse than my 1.7 for heavyness of steering. Granted, I do have a feeling something is knackered in it, just because it doesn't make any other logical sense...
