extra engine codes?

so, my '87 manual has a list with 3 or 4 extra engine codes that i've not seen before - stuff like 'o' on the end - any ideas what this signifies?

I think the special letters are for the engines with catalysator / pulsair / EGR systems...

maybe true, i'll have a look. whats pulsair/egr?

Pulsair = a system which introduces air into the exhaust system to promote burning of emissions
EGR= Exhaust Gas Recirculation
The first letter is B or D, meaning petrol or diesel.
Next is a number indicating engine capacity (volume)
Next is a letter: K/A = carburettor; E=injection with catalytic converter (LE-jetronic); F= injection w/ catalytic converter and lambda probe (oxygen sensor) (LU-jetronic)
The last letter: S=swedish, E=european, O=overseas, U=southamerican, A=australian, D=version with 3-way catalytic converter without lambda probe (oxygen sensor)
Then there's also this classification (defines emission control):
- B14.4E, B14.4O, B172K, B200KE, B200KO, *EE, *EO: has crankcase ventilation system only
- B14.4S, B200KS, *EA: has crankcase ventilation system, EGR and PulsAir
- *F: has crankcase ventilation system, catalytic converter and lambda probe (oxygen sensor)

Hi Hugh
EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation - a system designed to reduce the amount of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) produced by the vehicle.
These are typically produced when combustion temperature are very high such as when cruising or mid range acceleration. The system works by bleeding a metered amount of exhaust gases into the fuel air mix, with the effect of reducing combustion temperatures.
I`ve never seen one on a 340 though I do remember a poster from Holland on the VOC site having problems with his. Perhaps they were only fitted in certain countries. Late UK Models were of course fitted with a 3 way cat. ( HC,CO & NOx) Don`t know if these had EGR too.
IIRC the Pulsair system introduced air into the exhaust stream to promote the further reaction of any spare HC and CO in the emissions.

Fantastic, thanks for the summary!
About EGR:

True, EGR was very often installed on german or dutch Volvo 360 (strict environmental rules I think). I never saw that on a belgian or french Volvo 300. There are sometimes problems (engine running irregularly) but I don't have that yet on my german 360 GLi with EGR.

The 7th and 8th character of your vehicle identification number tell you exactly what engine you have:
53 = B14.4E
54 = B14.4O
55 = B14.4S
72 = D16
11 = B172
20 = B200KO
21 = B200KS
23 = B200KE
22 = B200EO
25 = B200EA
28 = B200EE
27 = B200 F

The other code worthy of note is the cylinder head code. The last three digits give the type. Almost all B2x0 engines have a 530 head - the 'normal' one, but some (B230ET, B230FB) have a 531 which flows better. Then there's the 631 from the B230K 'heron head' engine(combustion chamber in pistons), and the older 405, 305 heads from the B19/B2x series
cheers

does the 1.4 have any different head codes

probably, but they're all pretty slow, so no-one cares

;)
hehe jk. im guessing the gtt head is slightly differetn

AFAIK there was only one head on the B14 (from Volvo)....or at least only 'one' in terms of performance.
cheers
