Bang, then no drive-broken
Bang, then no drive-broken
I have just been towed home after breaking down tonight. That will teach me for moaning about my car!, why is it always raining and freezing cold when it happens?. I was travelling at approx 30mph when i went for a gearchange there was a bang, a horrendous grinding noise then no drive. It will go into gear but when you try and pull away all you get is a grinding noise and no movement there was no warning of any problems. Has anyone got any ideas, it didn't sound good.

Cheers, am going to try to look at it tomorrow, got to get it on my drive first though as it is abandoned on the road at the moment. My father in laws 02 reg astra really struggled to tow it!

Best way to make sure it is the prop (from experiance it will be the spines)
put car into nuetral
grip the prop and turn it if it spins the it will be the splines on the bell housing end. If id the other end then you will nee to raise a rear wheel and try and turn the wheel in gear. If that is the case then you should be able to see one part moving and the other not.
If the prop is gripping then it could be the clutch but my money is on the prop. If buying a s/h go for one from a mk3 as for some reason the have less proplems normaly imo - dont knwo why.

Will do, when did the mk2 change to a mk3 as i thought my 87 E reg was a mk 3. I have just spoken to a bloke who thinks it could be the diff as it has had a bit of a whine. I really won't know until i have looked, if it ever stops raining!!!!!.

If it was the diff, then it wouldn't make any noise in neutral
I'm afraid, when it comes to the Volvo 300s, unless they have specifically dealth with them before, then the 'experts' are pretty clueless. Whatever you do, don't take the car to him
Dai's method would work well. neutral gear with clutch released will lock the engine end and free the gearbox end so if it spins, its a problem with the engine end, either the crimp onto the rubber or the splines, and putting into gear with clutch depressed will free the engine end and lock the gearbox end.

Thank you, i am stuck at work and getting frustrated that i can't have a look, everyone seems to know what the problem is unfortunately they are all different! when i can finally get under car it will probably be obvious.

It wont be the diff, I've experienced that (at 65mph) and you'd know about it if it was that (it's not pretty)
Definitely prop splines or splines on the bellhousing/input shaft. Although the prop splines are famed for it - so hopefully with a new prop you'll be alright
